Chapter Four

“Thanks,” I said as Brenden pulled in my driveway. “Stay here. I’m gonna come over for a while. Just let me tell my parents. It looks like they’re finally home.”

“I’ll come in, if that’s alright with you.” I nodded and he followed me up to the house. Mom and Dad were in the kitchen eating when I entered. Mom stood up and walked over to me.

“Hey guys,” I said, hugging her. “How was your trip?” They had been in Hawaii for the past four days.

“It was great. We had to come back a little early because your father got burnt so badly,” Mom said. “We originally planned to fly home tomorrow night. But how was school this week? How’s that boy of yours? Where have you been, all dressed up?”

“School was fine, nothing exciting. I’m glad it’s almost over, though. It’s too nice outside to be cooped up inside all day.” I looked down. “Uh, well, I dumped Jackson tonight. I was out to dinner with him. He—well, he was pressuring me into having sex with him. And I kept saying no. He ended up being not-so-happy about it.” Brenden stepped forward and put his arm around my shoulder, letting me know he was there if I needed him. I nodded to him.

“She called me and I picked her up. They were at the lake up by Henrietta Avenue. I gave him the whole speech; how to treat a lady, why you can’t pressure them into anything, the whole nine yards.” Brenden seemed proud of himself. And my dad smiled up at him from where he was sitting.

“I’m gonna go to his house to hang out for a while, okay?” I asked. “I just need to grab some things. Come on, Bren.” I grabbed his wrist and pulled him behind me. We went upstairs to my room. “I was afraid it was going to be awkward for you to be down there with just them.” He smiled and sprawled out on my bed. I grabbed a pair of black sweatpants, a gray t-shirt, and some new underwear, since my others were lying on the ground at the lake. “I’m gonna go change.”

“You can stay here. Just tell me when you’re done. I won’t look until then, I promise.” He grinned mischievously.

“Then hide your face. I’ll let you know when you can look.” I slipped the halter tie over my head. His face was buried in my pillows.

“What movie do you want to watch?” Brenden asked from in front of the TV.

“Harry Potter,” I said. “Duh.” He put it in the DVD player and joined me on the couch. It was pulled out into a bed and we were cuddled together with a couple blankets and pillows. He had put in the second one. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. My favorite one. His arm made its way around my torso, pulling me close to him. His parents were upstairs sleeping and I could hear his father snoring.

“Bren, I’m gonna stay here tonight, okay?” I asked. I felt him nod beside me. I had to call my parents now. I grabbed my phone and dialed my house.

“Hello?”

“Hey, Mom. I’m gonna stay at Bren’s tonight, okay?”

“That’s fine, dear. See you in the morning. And behave.”

“Sure thing, Mom.”

“Love you. Goodnight.”

“Love you, too.” I hung up and turned my attention back to the movie. They were ‘following the spiders.’ One of my favorite parts. But, it always scared me. Spiders were the worst. I turned to face Brenden. Every time a spider came too close to the screen, I buried my head in his chest. His arm remained around me the whole time, occasionally pulling me closer to him. I eventually fell asleep. In Brenden’s arms.
