Chapter Nine

“Par-tay!” Shane yelled, dancing her way into my room. She was wearing her new purple dress and carrying her new shoes. Metallic gold, strappy stilettos. “Do my hair and make-up,” she commanded, making herself comfortable in the chair to my vanity. Mascara with gold glitter, shiny gloss, black eyeliner, and gold shadow. Half-up, half-down hairstyle, with waves and curls framing her face. Nice work, if I do say so myself.

“The gold really highlights your brown eyes, Shay,” I said when I was complete. She smiled and stood up to let me sit.

“I’m gonna go downstairs and make sure everything is set up. The party is in an hour, so hurry up.” She disappeared out of the room, leaving me to get ready. Black liner, mascara with silver glitter, shiny gloss. My hair was already scrunched, so I just pulled some off to the side. “Court! Brenden is here!” Shane yelled up the stairs.

“Send him up!” I yelled back, admiring myself in my floor-length mirror. I saw his reflection coming up to me. He was wearing khakis and a light blue polo. Casual and classy. I turned around just as he got to me and kissed him. When I pulled away, I saw that he had gloss on his lips. I wiped it off and reapplied, laughing as I wrapped my arms around him.

“Hey, baby,” he said, grabbing my waist. “That dress looks beautiful on you.” I smiled. “But I bet it would look better off you.” He smirked down at me as I smacked him on the shoulder. “I’m just kidding, babe.” He pulled me back in for a kiss, but I dodged his lips, pouting to show off my gloss.

“Courtney! Brenden!” Shane yelled. “People are gonna start coming in like ten minutes! Get your asses down here!” I grabbed my shoes and Brenden’s hand before walking out of the room. “Where’s Nagini?”

“Outside, fenced in. She has food and water. And people can go in and see her if they want,” I said, rushed. The doorbell rang. “Here they come.”

“Thanks so much for coming! Are you sure you can’t stay?” I asked as Lauren and Alyssa Murphy grabbed their purses and headed for the door. They were twins and used to be my best friends. We drifted apart a bit recently, but we were still friends.

“No, we really should get home. It was a great party, though. You should have another sometime this summer,” Alyssa said, hugging me.

“Yeah, and maybe you can come over to chill sometime. It’s really a shame we drifted so much,” Lauren continued, following her sister’s lead in hugging me. I smiled and nodded in agreement. I watched their fiery red hair bounce as they made their way to their white Mercedes. Brenden came up and put his arm around my waist.

“Well, that’s the last of them,” he said. “Everyone else is staying the night. We have Christine,” Christine McDonald, that is. “Alexis and Cooper,” Alexis Blaine and Cooper Reynolds, couple of three months. “Arik and Nate,” Arik and Nate Christianson, brothers; junior and senior. “Kaylynn,” Kaylynn Anderson, who has a huge crush on Arik. “Scary,” Selena Cary. “And Josh.” Josh Hayne. He was Brenden’s best guy friend. “Oh and you, me, and Shane, of course.” I smiled.

“The party went really well—I think, at least,” I said to Brenden while getting popcorn for the movie.

“Everyone loved it,” he replied, grabbing a couple bowls and leading me down to the basement. We were watching P.S. I Love You, one of the best movies ever. When I dropped off the popcorn, I headed back upstairs to let my parents know how many people were staying—not that they would care.

“Mom, Dad,” I asked, knocking on their bedroom door.

“Come in,” my mom’s soft voice came through the door. I walked in to find her on her laptop, and Dad sleeping beside her.
