Chapter Twenty
“Wake up, kids! Now!” my dad yelled from the hallway. I groaned and sat up. It was almost noon. I shook Brenden and glanced down at Ashtyn to see that she was already waking up and Trevor was nowhere to be found.
“Brenden, get up.” I shook him again. He groaned and rolled over. “Get up. It’s almost noon and we’re going shopping later.” He ignored me. I got out of bed, careful not to step on Ashtyn, and headed for the bathroom. The door was locked when I got there, so I waited outside for a couple minutes for Trevor to finish showering. “There are some of Brenden’s clothes in my bottom drawer if you didn’t bring any,” I said, walking into the bathroom.
When I returned to my room, Ashtyn and Trevor were gone and Brenden was still lying on my bed. “Brenny,” I said, crawling onto the bed with him. I kissed his neck. “Wake up, baby. You have to shower.” He rolled over to face me, opening one eye.
“I don’t wanna get up,” he grumbled. I kissed him, and once I got a response, I pulled away.
“Get up, come on.” I got out of bed and got dressed. He finally got up and headed for the bathroom, grabbing a towel from the closet on the way.
When he came out—wearing only a towel around his waist—he ran right into Ashtyn, who was headed to the bathroom for her shower. She blushed and turned to look at me. I smiled at her, trying not to laugh. I met Brenden just inside the doorway of my room with a kiss. His hands went to my face, pulling me closer. He pulled back, looking down. I followed his gaze to see that his towel had fallen and he was standing in my room naked.
“Shut up, Lu. It’s not funny,” he said, looking back up at me to see me shaking with silent laughter. He picked it up and walked to the other side of my room to get dressed. “Shit. I didn’t bring like anything. You have some of my clothes here?” I nodded and pointed to my dresser.
“I’m so tired,” Ash complained as we carried all our shopping bags upstairs.
“What are you tired for?” Brenden asked. “You’re carrying the least amount of bags.”
“Maybe I’m tired because we were shopping for six stinking hours!” she said, getting louder with each word. He stuck her tongue out at her and we continued up the stairs. We piled all the bags in the hallway so we could sort out which ones belonged to whom.
“Okay, now we’re almost ready for school,” I said. There was only four weeks left until I was a senior. “And soccer starts next week!”
“Ash, do you play soccer?” Brenden asked.
“Hell yeah!” she said, high-fiving me. “Striker!”
“You should see us when we play two-on-two,” I said. “We’re the perfect combination.”
“Yeah, the best defender in the league and the best striker, that’s just how it works,” Ash smirked. “You play, B?”
“I’m the goalie,” he replied. “The team’s gonna suck next year when I’m gone. You should see our back-up goalie.” He laughed.
“Bren, stop being mean. He’ll do fine next year,” I said, sticking up for the scrawny little junior, Eddie Mann. But, truthfully, I didn’t think he would be good enough to replace Brenden.
“Yeah, okay. Whatever you say, love. I better head home, though. I’ll talk to you later,” he said, walking over to me for a kiss.
“Later, Babe,” I said as he walked down the stairs.
“Bye, B.”
“See you later, Ash.”
“The two of you fight like siblings,” I said to her. She rolled her eyes at me and went into her room. I mimicked her actions, heading to my own room.
