Song: Lost by Secondhand Serenade

"I was a selfish boy in love with half a heart."

****

Grayson wakes up to his phone ringing. He checks the time on his bedside clock and sees that it's 6:03 in the morning. He grumbles, preparing to give the person who woke him up an earful. Finally, he looks at the screen. Lyla.

She wouldn't call him this early in the morning unless it was important. She knows he's not a morning person.

He picks it up.

"Grayson, it's Lyla's mother. Have you seen Lyla? Is she with you??" Lyla's mother's voice comes through the phone. Grayson sits up in his bed, shuffling to find a shirt.

"No, Mrs.Anders, she's not here. Is everything okay??" Grayson asks, growing more and more concerned as the conversation goes on.

He begins to get queasy by the tone of her voice. This can't be good. Something's wrong, why is she calling on Lyla's phone?

"Not really. It seems Lyla has run off... None of us can find her. We're all at our house trying to figure out where she could be. I'll try contacting her boyfriend. Can you meet us at our house to gather and try to figure out some places that she could be?" She asks, and Grayson's body fills with covetous at the word 'boyfriend'.

He can't believe that Lyla would ever run off, she always seemed happy about her life and she never complained about her household, even if it was filled with fighting and loud voices. Lyla never even told him that she thought about running away.

Something's not right.

"Of course, I'll be over to help when I'm up and moving." He tells her and the line goes dead.

He takes a deep breath and starts to get ready to go help out.

When he's ready, he hops into his car and drives to her house. He's trying to think of Lyla's favorite places, where she's taken him, he feels like the weight is on him to find her.

He runs into her house, bursting through the door to find Lyla's family all gathered in the living room, her stepdad gone, her father no where to be found, and her mother talking on the phone.

Her mother sees Grayson and says something into the phone and hangs up.

She walks over to him with a worried, saddened face.

"That was her boyfriend, he says he hasn't seen her since yesterday at school. He's coming also to help out." She says, taking a deep breath. She's been trying to hold it together but it's starting to come down on her, the realization is setting in that Lyla is gone. What if they don't find her?

Grayson knows that he needs to find her. For the sake of her mother, if nothing else.

"She's gone..." Her mother says, sitting down and putting her head in her hands.

Ashlyn Anders hasn't been the best mother, but she's always cared, Grayson has always known that. He hasn't seen Mrs. Anders in a few months, but she looks drained, more than she used to. Working and arguing with her husband takes a toll on her.

He puts his arms around her in a hug.

She cries and the two sit there like that, everyone in the room wondering the same thing...

Where the hell was Lyla Jones??
