CHAPTER 10: Half a Day Out 1

Tuesday came with no news whatsoever from Jake nor from other 'sources', as how Francis put them. The only thing new about today was the fact that school ended half-day, meaning instead of being dismissed at 4 pm, we were dismissed at 12.

"What's the occassion? Is the event for the school only or for everyone in the area?" Asked Duan as we stepped out of the gate. He was wearing his usual form when he entered so I was planning to give him another suggestion for clothes, but decided to leave it for another day.

"I don't know nor do I care. As long as we've got free time, then anything's fine with me!" I wailed as I checked my phone. I wonder if Zeige was out? What time was his vacant periods again? I don't know because.. Why should I? We stood by the school's waiting shed, facing the road, waiting for something.

"Are we going somewhere?"

"Duan, you're like an overly-curious child," I murmured and shoved my hands in my pockets.

He snorted and rolled his eyes, "Oh sorry. I wasn't born here nor do I live here, and I'm just being dragged around by a stranger,"

"What's your problem?" I raised a brow with a slight smirk and he rolled his eyes.

"I believe that humans themselves are the real problem," Duan retorted.

I resisted the urge to slam my elbow on his shadowy-excuse for ribs and instead, focused my attention to an oncoming jeepney. I waved my hand and it stopped infront of us.

"So we are going somewhere," Duan whispered when we sat down.

"Anywhere but here," I took out a 20 peso paperbill and handed it to the driver, "Two for town,"

Duan looked like, as I've stated before, an overly-curious child as he watched the scene behind us change with each rotation of the wheel. I sat beside him, watching his sparkling figure yet expressionless face.

"Not from around here?" Asked an old lady beside me.

I smiled, trying to contain my laughter as I replied "Definitely,"

We were in town in less than 20 minutes. The city sounds were quieter than usual and people looked calm and refreshed as they walked on the sidelines. And luckily, there were enough clouds in the sky to shield us- me- from the rays of the sun.

"Let's get something to eat then," I suggested and pointed to a nearby restaurant behind us.

He didn't mind since he heard my stomach grumble. We went in without even checking the title of the restaurant, and the air inside was amazing and mouth-watering. We sat down at an empty table by the window, eyes scanning the menu handed to us and ordered. Surprisingly, the food were cheap, so I went for a spaghetti set while Duan settled for a burger and hot coffee.

There was a tense silence hanging while we were waiting for our food, and the only thing keeping me company was the radio above us playing Taylor Swift's song "Fearless". I hummed to the tune, but then the silence became unbearable so I just had to speak.

"How old are you, Duan?"

He looked at me through the fringes of his midnight black hair and the sight made my heart skip a beat. Luckily, he didn't notice and replied, "In reality, I'm around 250 years old. I'm gonna reach 550 like my dad. But right now, around 17, I guess?"

"Wow, you have a dad? A Dullahan too?" I felt relieved that the silence was broken and a topic was finally made. Plus, it's an interesting topic too.

"Well, not related, but the one who came before me is considered my dad. There could only be one Dullahan, afterall, and a new one will be ressurected whe the last one dies,"

"Oh," I muttered, "So how did your dad die?" That was such a stupid question, and any human asked that would probably be insulted. Thank God he isn't human in the first place.

"You know, gold bullets and knives," He shrugged.

I was about to say something stupid again when the tray of our orders were placed on the table and the smell of good spaghetti hit my nostrils. I quickly opened the styrofoam container and we ate in a much comfortable silence.

I looked out the window and smiled at my reflection. I wonder where to take him next.
