Chapter 6: "Monday in the Class"
Monday came up too early for my liking. And I am not a morning person nor a Monday person, but somehow, I woke up with a good start, even when the weather was damp, cold and foggy. Which, of course, led to questioning looks from my family and friends.
"Well, good morning to you too," I beamed at them even though they didn't speak up at first, "I'll be a bit late today."
"Oh? What for?" My mom raises a brow at me.
"Student council activities and such," I needed to lie this time, and somehow, it's like they caught my urgency to leave already. They didn't notice the white lie though.
"Okay. Be careful on your way back!"
I ran out, flipping my phone out in the process and reading over the message that I just received a couple of minutes ago.
'Sender: Zeige
Told Duan to meet up w/ u in Alley4. Hurry b4 some1 sees him.'
I didn't have to reply so I maneuvered myself in the familiar streets of Idogan, skipping down the stairs of the shortcut 2 steps at a time and then counting off the alleys that I am passing by. Just as I stopped infront of the fourth, I saw the familiar silhouette of our... Inhuman friend.
"Good morning. Did you wait long?" I asked, ushering myself into the small clearing and leaning on the wall.
Duan probably shook his nonexistant head as he petted his horse, which somehow fitted in this narrow passegeway, "It was hard trying to avoid the eyes of mortals, so it took a while. I just got here actually,"
"Oh, so you don't melt when you're under the sun?"
"Don't compare me to the American vampires,"
I resisted he urge to snort in an unwomanly fashion so I only shrugged.
"So... How do you suppose you are going to help me?"
I looked up at the sky, "No, it's not only me who's helping you," I gave him a reassuring pat on the back, which felt weird and surreal considering the fact that his body gave off a sense of other-worldy feel to it, "I got the whole gang to cover every nook and cranny of matters regarding your head,"
He gave me a silent look, "Gang?"
"I mean class," I rolled my eyes and straigthened myself up before fixing my bag. Looking at my watch, I realized that I only had 10 minutes left to make it to school. Which was impossible since my daily routine was always perfect, and even the slightest minute off could get me late.
Okay, so I'm a bit exhagerating but it doesn't change the fact that I am going to be late.
"Duan, let's go,"
"Huh? How am I suppposed to go out with so much people-"
"No time!" I yanked his wrist, which was still feeling creepy, and pointed at his horse, "I know a shortcut!!"
And thus, I ended up riding on the famous Dullahan's horse, arms around his somewhat slim waist and clinging to it as if my life depended on it. Anyone would actually. Because one, the horse was so fast. Two, the horse was too fast. And three, the horse was FAST!
It didn't take long before I saw the familiar beige-colored building of our school, Educare, come into view, "Go around the back. We'll come in through the terrace,"
"Are you sure?" He asked as his horse slowly made a turn to round the back, "I do not like risking my entire existence and purpose on the hands of a 15 year old girl,"
"I'm 16!" I hissed, jabbing my hand into his side but got no reaction of pain or whatsoever from him.
We gently landed on the terrace with nobody watching us. Luckily, the fog disguised his presence from the road adjacent to the terrace. I peeked through the glass doors, finding some of my classmates standing by the door chatting, and by the echoing I heard from the distance, I'm guessing that the bell just rang. They went inside, all but Penny, who saw me staring. She looked at the hallways before she gave me the signal.
I ushered Duan through the doors, quietly and quickly, and then pushed him inside our classroom and locked the door.
The first reaction we got from our class was stopped when I gave them a glare, "Scream and I'll let him behead you," So all was silent, even Duan, until I couldn't supress my laugh no more.
"I really don't know whether to consider you human or not," Was Duan's first statement as he broke the silence.
Everyone made a look of mixed emotions- from fear, to anxiety, to confusion, to plain shock. Name it, and this batch of 19 has each face.
I regained my composure, settling myself in a good distance in the middle of the class, "Guys, we need your help in looking for Duan's head,"
"D-Duan.... T-the headless... Rider..?!" Najeba stuttered.
"He killed them! He killed my brother's friend!!"
"How could you!!"
"Monster! Leave us alone!!"
The class was getting unruly, and I'm afraid that the sudden noise could interupt our neighboring classrooms and someone might actually try to peep in. But before I could speak, Duan already made his way to the front.
"Yes, I am Duan, a Dullahan or a Headless Rider. No, I did not kill anyone for I have merely made those illusions of people I have encountered. They are perfectly fine, just trapped within my spell. I did it for my head. Yes, I am a monster but no, I can't leave you alone just yet," He said.
Everyone was still in a moment of shock, but I couldn't blame them. If I was as normal as them, then I'm guessing that they'll take more than a day to grasp the situation at hand. But I'm not, so I got over this in less than an hour or something. But something got me in his speech.
"Wait, so they're not all dead?"
"No. They are fine," He reassured me, patting my back the same way I did to him this morning, "But I will not release them unless I get my head back,"
"The hell do we care about your head!" Naseem gave the Dullahan a scowl, crossing his arms.
"Yes. My head does not need special infernal care from mortals such as you," Duan retorted back, his hand already slipping to his side to grab his whip but I stopped him. I shook my head fiercely, pleading with his headless form with my eyes, and his shoulders slumped.
"I can wipe out this entire building right now if it wasn't for this mortal," He whacked my head upside and I had to resist giving him a good payback at that. Seriously, the acknowledgement would've been better off without the hit.
It seems that the class was shaken by his words and they managed to regain their old selves. I smiled fondly at them.
"Let's take it from the very top then and-"
The door opened with a smooth swish and Maam Julie stood there, "Don't lock the doors if there's no teacher in!"
The words came out before she even registered the fact that a pitch-black being stood by the center of the class. Her somewhat angry look turned to that of... A somewhat angrier look.
"What now?!"
