CHAPTER 20: And It Happens Again

.

.

It didn't take long for Duan to start going around again, claiming more victims. The fear came back after 2 weeks of peace, and now, 7 more people have been announced as dead.

Of course, our class didn't believe that they were truly dead, for Duan once told us that they were under some sort of spell. We thought we didn't have to bother with it because we don't have connection with Duan anymore, but the death toll keeps rising.

"Why did Duan leave?" Asked Chrischelle, crestfallen, as she pouted at me.

"Sorry," That was all I could say.

I also felt down. I mean, it was a wrong move. I shouldn't have ran out. I'm sure we could've solved it instead of having him kicked out like that.

"I'm sorry,"

The class went back to normal though, and the topic wasn't brought up anymore. We merely went back to being ignorant of the case.

"Are you okay with this?" Asked Penny when we sat down to eat our lunch.

I casted a short glance at her and then back down to my food, "He was the one who left,"

"I thought Zeige told him to,"

I stopped abruptly and then remembered Zeige's expression. If only he hadn't taken those actions seriously. If only he didn't get mad. If only he didn't see me in such a state.

If only I had known what Duan was feeling at that time.

"You know what?" I closed my lunchbox and stood up, "I'm not alright with this! I'm gonna talk to him,"

It was deja vu when night time came and Penny and I stood by the school's waiting shed. I pulled on my jacket's sleeves to hide my frostbitten fingers and looked at her.

"You okay with this?" I asked.

Penny smiled, "I asked you the same thing, so what do you think I'd reply?"

I let out a chuckle and gave her a fist bump. Later on that evening, at around 10 pm, the familiar roar of engines broke through the cold air. I stepped out of the shed and into the highway, seeing red eyes staring at me as it approached.

"Duan," I called.

The Dullahan came a couple of feet from me, horse whinning, and then finally stopped. The tense air around us hanged before his familiar voice echoed in my ear.

"What?"

I let a smile grace my features, "Can I talk to you for a while?" And then, I extended out my hand to him.

He seemed to stare at it for a while before deciding to climb off his horse and step over to me.

"You've got 5 minutes,"

We went over to the waiting shed and sat down. The memory felt so nostalgic that I had a smile on my face the whole time.

"Listen, I'm..." I said through a shaky breath, "I'm sorry about what Zeige said,"

He crossed his arms, "Let him be the one to apologize to me then,"

"He's not replying my texts," That was half a lie because I did text him (but not about the incident) and he's not replying.

"I won't accept it,

"Then," I looked down and fidgeted with my fingers, "Will you accept mine?"

"What for?"

"I realized that I didn't know what else you felt besides wanting to find your head," I explained with a forced smile, "I was being selfish,"

"Again," added Penny.

I nodded but gave her a short glare, and then put my attention back on him, "Just what did I do to make you feel bad?"

He seemed to hesitate. I don't know. I couldn't see his face, but I knew that I really did something wrong.

"Just what is Zeige to you?"

I blinked. I looked at Penny and she rolled her eyes at me, "He means what do you think of Zeige," She said.

"Oh, well... Let's see..." I looked up at the metal roof of the waiting shed and then closed my eyes, "He's just an annoying friend who sometimes acts like an overprotective brother,"

"Then... What do you think he thinks of you?"

I shrugged, "The same,"

"It's not," He retorted.

"It is," I furrowed my brows at him. Just what is he implying?

"It's not," This time it was Penny who said it and I stared at her, "You can't be THAT dense about it,"

"What?"

"What he thinks of you is much more than that," She said.

"So he thinks I'm a really huge annoyance then?"

"Better than that," Penny shook her head in disbelief and then stared at me square in the eyes, before pointing a finger at me, "He likes you. A lot."

I blinked, once. Twice. Thrice.

"H-he does?"

"He does." Duan reconfirmed, holding out his hand at me, "And I do too,"

Oh my gosh.

"Eh?"

Did the Headless Rider, the Dullahan named Duan, just say that he LIKES me?
