CHAPTER 15: It Matters to Us!

.

.

"Cousin Damus," I breathed out, relieved at his sudden appearance, "Great timing,"

He approached us with a raised brow on his masculine and dark features. His spiky, waxed hair was slicked back, and he wore the formal attire of the police force, "Need anything?"

"Sort off," Francis grinned at him.

Patricia stood up and smiled cheekily, "Just wanted to know if you come here often,"

Cousin Damus' brow was still raised and he shook his head, "Sorry, I don't swing for younger girls,"

I glared at him while my classmates overreacted with various expressions. He smiled back but I rolled my eyes, "That's not what she meant," I stated.

"Well, that's what I heard,"

Patricia laughed, rubbing the back of her head and smiling sheepishly, "Sorry, wrong words!"

"So, yeah..? I'm assigned here already and I started a month ago," Cousin Damus said, pointing to the police station with a slight tilt of the head.

My eyes lit up, "Do you get access to the records?"

"I make the records,"

"Ah! Bingo!" Nearly everyone pumped a fist on the air while I shot a victory sign at Penny. She smiled back and gave a thumbs up. Cousin Damus, however, became suspicious.

"What of it? You stalking someone again?"

This time, it was Duan who gave me a light smirk, "Again? Did this before already, Jeffy?"

"What? No!! I just asked that for a research!" I rolled my eyes and redirected my attention back to my cousin, "We need help. We just wanted to know what happened to a guy that we need information from,"

He sat down on the bench, beside John and Francis, and settled his bag and other things on his side, "Well, if it's not bad then I guess it's okay. Who is he?" He smirked and folded his legs.

I looked at everyone first then to Duan for their consent and they all seemed to agree. I leaned over to him, close enough for only us to hear, before I whispered, "Alfred McGranz,"

I pulled back immediately, catching his eyes wide and mouth slightly agape, before he pulled me down, setting me beside John as he ducked, "How do you know him?!"

Francis tapped his shoulder, "I just researched,"

Cousin Damus glared over his shoulder and I called him back to face me, "We weren't supposed to know him then?"

He exhaled and stared at me with a cold look, "Nobody should. Now tell me why you know him,"

I was about to give a retort but John had pulled me back, butting in with a sensible question, "Tell us why nobody should know him first,"

"It doesn't matter,"

"It does to us! We have someone to help and that guy is needed!" Jel yelled back.

"We need information about him," I said, controlling my urge to yell like the others.

"You better stay out of this, Jeffy. It's for your own good,"

"I can't! Not when hiding him from us means more deaths for our community!" I hissed, finally rising to my feet.

Cousin Damus was slightly taken back, frozen on his spot with disbelieving eyes looking up at me, "What?"

Patricia made her way around the bench, just behind him, and placed her hand on her shoulder, "You have to help us,"

"Irisan has to be saved before even more people dies," Penny added.

This time, it was him who rose to his feet, towering over the rest of us with a slightly menacing aura, "Why? What about Alfred? What connection does he have with the deaths?"

"He has something I need." Duan's cold voice came and he stepped over between us, lifeless eyes boring into my cousin's, "And I will not stop unless I find it,"

"You? You're a killer-?!" Francis and John clamped a hand around Cousin Damus' mouth, silencing him as passersby watched us with curious expressions.

I hushed him down but still did not let the two boys remove their hands on his mouth, "Please, trust me," I softened my eyes, hands on either of my sides clenching, and then I bowed, "We need to help Duan and these steps are needed,"

I didn't want to explain the whole situation to him. I didn't want to have someone involved with this again. I know our class could do it by our own, and we intend to end it by ourselves too. We just need the right people to help us and the right resources to use, and we could manage.

Cousin Damus' composure softened as well and the boys removed their hands from his mouth. He stood up straight, dusting his clothes, before heaving a really dragged sigh.

"I don't know what you're up to, nor do I want to know," He shot a look at me but I felt no menace whatsoever, "But I guess this is the part where I play as a somewhat supportive older brother, huh?"

I smiled and gave a curt nod, "Yeah,"

He let his fingers run through his slicked hair and then sat back down, "Listen closely. I don't wanna repeat this okay?"

We huddled together in the small cramped bench, listening closely as he started his narration.
