CHAPTER 19: Stay away
.
.
I was too busy wallowing in my problems and fear that I didn't notice the calling of my name from afar. I lifted my head instinctively, eyes squinting to adjust at the sudden brightness and made out Zeige's form.
"Jeffy!" He said, walking over in large strides and crouching beside me, "What happened?"
I shook my head, wiping my cheek with the sleeves of my jacket, "Nothing... It's- what... How about you?"
He must've sensed the insecurity within my words, but he chose to answer me first, "I was gonna fetch you cuz I know you're planning to come late,"
Leave it to Zeige to know me that much. I gave a forced smile and looked at my fingers, "I see..."
Zeige's cold yet familiar fingers clutched my shoulder, shaking me slightly, "Now what happened to you?"
"I just... Didn't feel like it,"
I was met with silence for a long time, before Zeige suddenly stood up, muttering something along the lines of a curse and a name.
"Zeige-" I followed him up, holding onto his sleeve.
"Goddamnit!" He hissed, pulling his sleeve away from me, "That Duan did this didn't he?!"
"No- it's a misunderstanding...!"
But then he ended up running off before I could say anything else. I tried to follow after him, but I'm not the athletic type. He was meters away from me when he reached my house, storming into the door and flipping on the switch.
"Duan! Get your ass out of here!" He roared.
I finally made it to him, grabbin his arm and tugging on it slightly, "Zeige, he didn't-"
Duan stepped into view, eyes glazed with indifference, "What now?"
Zeige stomped over to him, pulling on the front of his jacket and bringing their faces closer. The 3 centimeter gap of Zeige on Duan made his purple eyes look even more intimidating, but Duan just stared up at him.
"What the hell did you to her?" He hissed.
Duan shrugged, making Zeige clench his teeth tighter and slam the being on the wall. I was about to react but Zeige continued to speak in a voice drenched in venom.
"What. Did. You. Do?!"
Duan finally gave in, but not in fear, for I could see a faint spark of malice on his eyes, "I was gonna make her mine,"
His eyes widened for a fraction of a second before returning to his if-looks-could-kill mode, "What?!"
"I was going to make her MINE," Duan replied, emphasizing his words, "You know, as in, make her a partner,"
Zeige pulled on him and slammed him back to the wall and I ran to stop him, "Zeige, he didn't mean-!"
"Oh, I meant it alright," Duan gave a smirk, "I mean it more than you could ever-"
Zeige had already pulled his arm back and slammed it hard on the wall a couple of millimeters from Duan's face, stoping him abruptly. I was frozen too, because I swear I could see a dent on the wood, and that I could feel the tension hanging in the air.
"Stay away from her," Zeige growled.
Duan stared back, still indifferent, before swiping away the hand on the front of his jacket. Zeige let go and stepped back just infront of me, as if guarding, while the other walked away to the door.
"Duan, you don't have to," I whispered but he raised a hand to stop me.
He turned slightly, looking at us over his shoulder, as black shadow-like things enveloped him, "You'll regret this,"
Then, he turned back to his old form, the one with the pitch black armor and no head, and his horse waiting outside with glowing red eyes. He climbed onto the horse and casted an imaginary look at us.
I could only gulp and watch him leave in a blink of an eye, silence returning between me and Zeige. He turned around, menace fading as he gave a soft smile, "Shall we go?"
It's as if nothing happened. It's as if he didn't just confront a headless rider a couple of minutes ago.
But I knew more than to bring it up again, especially since Duan left us now, "Y-yeah..." I recomposed myself and followed him out.
Before I shut the door, I remembered the dent on the wall and said, "You have to fix that, you know,"
"Augh... Right..."
I walked a couple of steps behind him, slightly insecure about not only his anger issues (which only happens once in a blue moon) but also about what Duan had said.
Now that the Dullahan isn't on our side anymore, even we are in danger of being killed.
