The two of you sat inside of Taco Bell, eating your Mexican food happily. You jumped as thunder shook the ground, but Johnnie's firm, loving grip on your hand calmed you down some. He was helping you get over your phobia a few terrifying steps at a time, making sure to get a seat right next to the window.
"This was such a terrible fucking idea," you mumbled as a large bolt of lightning splayed across the sky.
"I think this was actually a wonderful idea," Johnnie said happily, taking a sip of his Baja Blast.
"Well I'm sure you'd think that. You aren't the one terrified of storms."
"Why are you even afraid of storms? They aren't that scary."
"I don't know, they're always portrayed as this super scary thing. When I was a kid, my dad let me watch a scary movie with him and being the young impressionable child that I was, I associated storms with psychotic serial killers out for blood. So I guess that's why."
"Y/N, you're letting your childhood fears control your life. You've got to quit thinking about the worst side of everything and start thinking about the happier sides."
"Happier sides of psychotic, bloodthirsty serial killers?"
"No! Ugh, you aren't taking me seriously are you?"
"Nope." He rolled his eyes, groaning in frustration. All the while, you were giggling at him, flicking chunks of ground beef at him.
"Okay, Y/N, you need to at least try to take me seriously, okay?"
"Okie dokes."
"Can you do that?"
"I can, indeed."
"Okay. I-"
"Mhm." Johnnie stared at you straight on, his mouth straight and his eyes showing no amusement. You decided to stop fucking around with him, giving him a chance to actually speak.
"You need to think about storms in a different light. Rain is such a calming sound. When it's gentle pitter pattering on your window, it's a calm, repetitive sound. When it's beating down on every inch of everything, it just reminds you of how absolutely enormous and amazing the world is."
"Okay. Go on."
"Lightning is amazing. To think that electricity can be conducted and shot out in bolts like that is amazing. Lightning can be pretty cool when it splays out across the sky."
"Pretty sure that isn't how lighting works, but continue."
"Shh, yes it is. And with thunder, it's an amazing feeling when you can feel sound moving the ground beneath you. Imagine it like mother nature is making music for you, and she really wants you to like it so she makes it as loud and magnificent as she can. She wants you to feel the sound, feel it as it moves you and makes you judge it's quality. She's offended when you get scared of it so she changes it every time because she wants you to appreciate what she's doing for you. She wants you to like what she's doing."
"That was actually a really beautiful analogy, Johnnie. I didn't know you had that in you."
"THANK YOU," he burped out, smiling as you facepalmed. "Honestly though, do you understand where I'm coming from?"
"Yeah. And it'll take some getting used to before I can think about it like you do."
"I know. And I can wait as long as I need to, so long as you actually get over your fear. Learn to love your surroundings instead of dismissing them like they're scary or not worth loving."
"I know what you mean."
"Good."
"Hey Johnnie?"
"Hmm?"
"Do you wanna go outside and admire mother nature's music?"
"Fuck yeah, I do."
