It started off as the perfect night. You had just finished a long tiring day at work, and you wanted to do nothing more than just spend some time with Shannon and relax. She had said she had a surprise for you, but that you'd have to come home in order to find out what it was.
You were excited, and quite terrified at the same time. The last time Shannon had gotten you a surprise, you came home a saw a sink filled with whipped cream and a bunch of dishes buried underneath the creamy goodness. You hadn't talked to her for three days after that.
You gathered your jacket and other belongings and rushed out the door, getting into your car. You put the keys in the ignition and had almost started the car when you saw three ambulances pull up to your work. You immediately got out of the car, leaving your bag inside. You locked it, running inside to find out what's going on. Your superior saw you as soon as you stepped foot in the building.
"There was a pile up on Allegheny River Boulevard," he said. "We need you in surgery now." You nodded your head, running to the elevator and heading up to the third floor.
You asked the secretary at the front desk to call Shannon to tell her that you'd be late. You couldn't help but feel slightly distracted as you suited up in your enormous gloves and baggy suit.
As the best female surgeon on your side of the country, you couldn't help but feel everyone's eyes on you as you helped your first patient. Being a surgeon wasn't an easy job on its own, but as a female surgeon, everyone was watching you, waiting for you to slip up.
You cleared up your thoughts as you picked up your scalpel. You had to focus.
It took you two hours to do your first surgery. Three for your second. You were lucky enough to only have to do those two, the rest having only minor enough injuries that they were done quickly. You were sent home at around one in the morning, and didn't make it home until 1:30, nearly six hours later than you should've.
You tiptoed into the house, being as quiet as you could. You got dressed into your pajamas, which were nothing but some of Shannon's sweatpants, a sports bra, and a pair of fluffy socks. You slipped into the bathroom and brushed your teeth, brushed you hair, and took off your makeup. You slipped into bed next to Shannon, draping an arm over her. She moved back, pressing her back against your torso.
"Mm, how was work?" she asked groggily. She was probably half asleep, and would most likely not remember the conversation.
"It was okay," you said, not wanting to remember the state that your patients were in. "There was an accident. A pileup. We had quite a few surgeries to do."
"That sucks. You okay?" You shrugged. You loved you job, sure, but when it came to things like this, where the damage isn't just internal, it kind of messes you up. You don't like it when car wrecks happen, or there's an earthquake, or somebody gets hit by a car. You hate the thought of what could've happened if Shannon were there, or if one of your parents had been there. She knew how you felt, not pressing the matter.
"I'm sure I'll be fine. I just need some sleep, okay?" She moved closer to you, if that was even possible, flipping over and cuddling into your chest.
"Okay, goodnight." You smiled, kissing the top of her head.
"Goodnight."
