His car was cold; the heater was broken and has been for a week, as Liam told me. We awkwardly sat there until I finaly broke the silence. "What do you think he'll be like?" I asked referring to Alfie.
"To be honest I'm not exactly sure." He took his eyes off the road to look at me. "But this guy sounds like he has some issues." I didn't know what he meant by issues and asked. "I mean what do you expect, Ellia, if some stranger knew every detail of your life?"
I took a deep breath and moved my head closer to the driver seat. "Maybe he's spying on us. Or has been getting information from close family and friends of ours." The thought that someone like that random author having descriptive conversations with someone like my parents about my life and background scared me. I feel like that would be breaking some forbidden rule of privacy. The one that keeps people from going through someones bag, or standing in the corner of their crush's bedroom and watching them sleep. This rule should also prevent authors from writing down someones life story without concent. Shouldn't it? Maybe Alfie Tailer does have issues.
I found myself starring off into space for the longest time. But I wasn't really starring off into space, I was starring at Liam. Telling myself I'm starring at nothing helps me forget how much I wish I could look at his concentrated eyes forever. I knew Liam's pupils dialated when he was reading or getting deep into conversation, but this is the first time I've been in a car with him.
His car smelled much better than my old hand-me-down. Liam's car actually had no scent, it was rather nice. His car was also clean (with the exception of what I think are ketchup stains on the backseat head rest). I didn't notice one wrapper, unlike my car where you'll find anything from Butter Finger wrappers to plastic DVD coverings. Once I even found an old copy of my favorite childhood book, Peter Pan, I lost when I was 8. Which is funny because I had never seen my current car until I was 10.
Liam's head turned to the side, his blue eyes locked with my brown ones. "What?" He said after raising his eyebrows at me.
I tried to look away, but that would just embarass me more. Luckily my face didn't feel like it was getting hotter, maybe a bit paler. "I-I-I" My voice sounded whispy and broken. "I'm sorry."
I tried to make my apology sound cute as I pushed my wavy hair behind my ears. It must have worked since Liam smiled. Then again he's always smiling. "It's beautiful." He looked at me with deep focus. Not having to pay attention since we were the only ones on the road at this time.
My face got paler. "Excuse me."
"This view is beautiful. The open road with the glimmering gold sunlight behind all the autumn trees." I went back to my amazed stare. This site was beautiful. Liam and I have always been used to driving beside busy drivers at rush hour to get the library. And when I wasn't driving to the library I was driving back to my home so late at night I had to wear my glasses.
"You think this is the place?" Liam pulled his car into a brick middle school's parking lot. "Hollis Middle School... I think."
I didn't turn my head to talk to him. "I hope so, I really have to go to the bathroom." Liam gave a small chuckle at my (rather serious) joke.
We easily found a parking spot by the back door of the school. Liam pulled the keys out of the ignition, put them in his pocket, then stepped onto the paved walkway. I followed. The back entrance was a pale blue double door. I walked in as Liam held the door open for me. Immediatly I was greeted with a banner saying "WELCOME TO HOLLIS MIDDLE SCHOOL".
