Never be alone

Only a week out from his three month tour around Canada and the US, Shawn was a bundle of nerves and excitement.

He was staying over at Mickey's house (in the guest bedroom of course) before a week long rehearsal camp.

"Where are you looking forward to visiting?" Mickey enquired, sticking a photo to her wall. She had a collection- they literally filled every available space on one of her bedroom walls.

"I'm not sure, everywhere seems so exciting! Maybe LA as it's so hyped up, and I'm playing a pretty big show there," Shawn answered, passing her the next photo. Mickey's photos were mostly from tumblr, so she was adding some new ones of her and Shawn.

"When did you take this one?" Shawn asked, looking at a picture of their entwined hands and Shawn's side profile.

Mickey glanced at the photo. "The first time we met up in Toronto," she said, smiling, "we went for that walk along the beach."

Shawn fell back onto her bed. "That's right! I didn't even notice you take it."

Mickey whispered something Shawn couldn't quite catch, tacking the next photo to her wall.

"What was that?" Shawn enquired, sitting up.

"Nothing," Mickey said quickly, "next photo?"

Shawn handed her one of them backstage at one of his shows in Toronto. "You know you can talk to me about anything, right?" he said gently.

"Yeah, of course," Mickey replied brightly. Yet Shawn could see the sparkle from her eye was missing. He'd been working too hard recently- forgotten to put time aside for Mickey.

He stood and wrapped his arms around her waist. "Are you okay?" he asked, kissing her collarbone.

Mickey sighed, pressing a photo to the wall, lingering her finger down words that read 'keep moving on.' She turned and gave Shawn a proper kiss.

"It...It's nothing," she said unconvincingly, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear.

"Doesn't sound like nothing," Shawn replied, lifting an eyebrow.

"It is, it truly is," she reiterated, attempting a smile.

"If you honestly say so," Shawn complied, frustrated. He wanted Mickey to open up. He'd shared his deepest feelings with her, yet he hardly knew anything about her, other than what she had on the surface. Her side of the relationship was only skin deep and it was starting to frustrate Shawn.

He looked away, pulling out his phone. He had a couple of missed calls from Andrew and a text reading call me.

"Do you mind if I quickly call Andrew? It sounds important," he asked. Mickey nodded and selected another photo, Shawn covered in feathers after their pillow fight.

Stepping out on her patio, Shawn lifted the phone to his ear. Andrew answered immediately.

"Shawn, good."

"What's up?" Shawn asked.

"We need to get you on the road now, you've been booked in for Ellen in a couple of days due to a cop out by some actor, as he got appendicitis. They want you and we're definitely going to give," Andrew said, and Shawn could hear the proudness in his voice.

"Wow, Ellen!" He marvelled. Ellen was a huge deal. It would be amazing for Shawn.

"Yep. We need to fly you out tonight. I've booked a flight for eight; sent the details through to your parents. I'm flying out on the next flight so that you'll be sorted when you arrive."

Tonight? That wasn't going to go down well. Shawn briefly removed the phone from his ear to check the time. Two thirty.  He'd need to leave back to Pickering as soon as possible if he wanted to make that flight, fully packed and ready.

"Is there anything later?" He asked Andrew.

"There is, but we really need you hear asap and that time is the most convenient for us. Plus it's already been booked. Is there a problem?"

Shawn bit his lip. Mickey would understand. It's Ellen! Anyone could understand for Ellen.

"No. Don't worry. I'll be on that flight," Shawn confirmed.

"Right, that's me boarding. See you later Shawn."

The dial tone sounded and Shawn slipped back into Mickey's room. She was just finishing up with the last photo.

"I love it, looks so cool," Shawn complimented.

"Thanks, it's a lot better with you as a feature," Mickey said flirtatiously, "what movie do you want to watch tonight?"

"About that..." Shawn started.

"Oh, do you want to go out instead? There is a party on-"

"No, uh, there's been a change of plans and I have to fly out to LA tonight..." Shawn trailed off.

Mickey fell silent, suddenly very interested in her hands.

"I'm so sorry, there was a case of appendicitis, so I've been booked for Ellen... We can reschedule-"

"When? When can we reschedule? When you have a couple of days break from tour in a month? Even then you'll be exhausted and wanting to be with your family," Mickey interrupted him, speaking harshly.

Shawn was taken aback by her sudden change in mood.

"Mickey? Right now it's pretty crazy and I don't how to stop or slow it down... but I'll always make time for you," he said softly.

Mickey wiped her eyes, turning away from Shawn.

"You're going to come join me anyway once school ends in a couple of weeks, right?" He said apprehensively, approaching her. Mickey was silent.

"Right?"

Mickey shook her head. "My parents won't let me, we're vacationing to Australia to see my aunt," she said tearfully.

Shawn stopped. He has simply assumed Mickey was going to be there with him for most of the tour. In fact she was going to be halfway around the world.

"Oh."

Shawn reached out towards Mickey, pulling her into his embrace.

"I promise that one day I'll be around, I'll keep you safe, I'll keep you sound," Shawn said, comforting her.

"It's going to be ages before we're actually together again," Mickey said, cuddling into Shawn.

"When you miss me, close you eyes I may be far but never gone," Shawn said, "and when you fall asleep tonight just remember that we lay under the same stars."

Mickey looked up at him. "That was really poetic and cute," she said, giggling.

Shawn smiled at her smile, wiping a tear off her face. "Don't cry," he told her, "it won't be for long."

"Hey, uh, I think there are some things we need to talk about..." Mickey said, pulling away.

Shawn's phone vibrated in his pocket. "Mickey, I can't stay," he said regretfully.

"This is kinda important Shawn-"

"Just let me hold you for a little longer now," he said.

Mickey kissed him, tears again flowing from her eyes. Shawn pulled away, coughing to disguise the the fact he was getting a little teary himself.

"You'll never be alone, okay? I'm only a call away," Shawn told her.

Mickey nodded, biting her lip a little.

"Shawn-"

"Love you okay? See you... see you as soon as possible," Shawn cut her off, kissing her head.

"But Shawn, what if something happens and you're not here? I need you," Mickey pleaded.

"Don't worry Mickey," Shawn comforted her,

"You need to believe."
