-------------It felt like a dream. Mickey left, leaving Shawn with her last words. Distraught, he didn't know what to do with himself. He carried himself through the next week, trying to appear his normal self and miserably failing.
"Shawn what's been up with you this week?" Karen asked Shawn over dinner, the day before he was due back on tour.
"Our love is on trial, and I hate it," Shawn says, depressingly.
"What?" Manny asked.
"He's talking about Mickey," Aaliyah said, exasperated, "they like totally had a fight."
Shawn glared at his younger sister.
"What?" She said innocently, "it's true!"
Karen looked pitifully at Shawn, adding more salad to her plate. "Don't take out your anger on Aaliyah, Shawn, I'm sure you and Mickey will be fine. She's probably just missing you and is distancing herself because of your tour."
"Just apologise even if you haven't done anything wrong. It works," Manny chipped in.
"You're so dramatic," Aaliyah said, rolling her eyes.
Shawn silently continued with his dinner and his mother tactfully changed the subject.
Shawn went to bed early, drained of the energy he used to have. Hence he woke too early the next morning, and decided to go running.
Grabbing his phone, earphones and water bottle, he started his run around the local woods area. Reaching his favourite track, he noticed a similar looking girl to Mickey stretching on the bench in front of the track. As he ran closer, he discovered, it was Mickey. Running up beside her, he tried to not to pant as he spoke.
"Haven't seen you in a while," he said.
She looked at him in minor shock, before scowling. He noticed her eyes weren't sparkling. "Didn't I tell you? Don't want your love."
"I'm not asking for much, I'm just tryna be fair, when I call you, you never wanna pick up? Why is it that everything I do is never ever enough?" Shawn asked.
Mickey just shoved her earphones into her ears and took off.
Shawn quickly followed suit, seemingly running a million miles an hour to keep up. Mickey ran wild, cutting in and out of the trail until leaving the track entirely.
Shawn felt a droplet of water run down his back and inwardly groaned at the inevitable. The rain came hard and fast, hindering Shawn's sight. He struggled to keep with Mickey's unusual path, crashing through trees and small plants as she seemed to be taking him deeper and deeper through the woods.
"Mickey!" Shawn cried out, as his foot lodged into mud as she ran on. He knew that if she kept running, Shawn would lose her... and his way out.
Mickey stopped, turning around. She paused, debating whether it was worth it to save Shawn. Potentially she could get stuck in the mud too. She could run on, and leave him and the mess behind, but she was partially responsible for him being stuck, even if she never asked for it. Also, she couldn't deny that she enjoyed having her running partner.
Mickey jogged back to him, lightly panting, offering him her hand. Together they managed to pull him out of the sticky situation and come out unharmed.
"This road we're on is going nowhere, if we keep on running like a couple of kids who just get lost in woods... we're losing our wits, I'm overcome with it, this is ridiculous," Shawn complained.
"I never asked you to follow me," Mickey cut in.
"How come every time we're together, you're the one that I miss?" Shawn enquired.
"I don't want your love!" Mickey repeated, loudly.
"But I just can't get enough!" Shawn responded louder, "how come the only time you feel compassion is when I'm stuck in the mud? You run wild."
"Maybe I feel I'm useless unless it rains," Mickey responded.
"Yeah. I know. You only like it when it rains. You mess me up! But still I come back for more," Shawn said curtly.
The rain continued to pelt down, swirling around their feet in a pool of mud and debris.
Shawn stood there, wishing he could kiss her like they use to do, while Mickey stood there, fighting every comforting feeling she felt towards Shawn.
"Let's get out of here," Mickey finally said, breaking the silence. Shawn nodded and the two set off at a more natural pace. Soon enough they were back to the beginning of the trail.
"I feel powerless and I don't want to split," he begged to Mickey.
"You have the your life, I have mine. I need to settle for less," she replied, rolling her eyes.
"What?" Shawn asked, confused.
"I saw the interview," Mickey explained.
"What- oh. Come on, Mic, you know that's not how I feel about you!" Shawn pleaded. No matter what he did, it wasn't the right move.
"You mess me up," Mickey said, shaking her head.
"Mickey! Don't be like this!" Shawn pleaded again. Yet Mickey was adamant to whatever decision that she was making.
"For the last time, you can't help me, and I don't want your love!" Mickey fired at him, "maybe I need to leave you in the mud."
With that, she stalked off. He watched her go, frozen as she disappeared into the gloomy day.Shawn sunk to the ground, knowing he'd truely lost one of the best things in his life- however being so unsure why.
He wanted to wallow in the stormy weather forever, but the rational part of his brain reminded him that he was booked for shows that required health and the ability to sing. Hence, Shawn hauled himself off the grounds, and with laboured movements began to make his way home.
Shawn pondered the last few weeks with Mickey, trying to find the point where everything started to go so wrong. The rain fell harder and Shawn picked up his pace, suddenly quite eager to make it to shelter. Right as he made it to his house he tripped, falling onto something sharp.
"OW!" He cried, feeling sick at the line of red that appeared on his knee. Limping, he made his way up the front path.
"What an actual hassle," Shawn muttered,
"this better not be needing stitches."
