John's POV

After my first day of school the last thing I wanted to do was deal with Emily drama. Apparently my life didn't work out the way I wanted.
Shortly after I got home, I heard the doorbell ring. I rushed to get it, hoping it was Aurora. I plastered a smile on my face and opened the door to Emily. My face slowly dropped to a frown.
"Happy to see me? Or were you expecting someone else?" Emily asked as she sauntered past me into my house.
"You're not the person I wanted to see right now," I muttered under my breath so that she couldn't hear. Oblivious to my prior comment, Emily continued, "Are you alone?"
"My parents don't get home until 10 tonight," I sighed in response.
"Perfect!" She giggled and she started walking up the stairs to presumably my room.
"Where do you think you're going?" I urged quickly.
"Your room so we can have a little privacy," she smiled.
"I think you need to leave," I said monotonously. At first, her face was shocked but it quickly turned to an evil grin.
"I know what this is about," she snarled, "You like someone else!"
"It's pretty obvious by now, so could you please just leave?" I retorted.
She laughed and sashayed out. Before she could head out the door, she turned and whispered "Nobody is as good as me." I watched and she got into her car, revved up the engine, and winked as she pulled away. I sighed. I knew I was a little rude, but honestly it was the only way to get the point across. Emily could be extremely stubborn at times, and I didn't want her messing things up with Aurora before they even started. If I don't find my mate, Aurora could be a substitute mate. Emily certainly couldn't.
I muddled through the house for the rest of the day until about 10 when I headed up to my room after saying good night to my parents. In my room, I worked up the courage and texted Aurora:
Hey! Want to meet up and talk?
I stared at the phone until it pinged 5 minutes later.
Sure. Talk through the windows in 5.
Five minutes felt like an eternity. When the time was up, I opened my window quietly and looked out into the warm unusually warm night. A few seconds later, the adjacent window slid open and Aurora's face glanced out into the darkness. Once her eyes adjusted she saw me and waved. I realized we couldn't talk across the windows because we might wake our parents up, so I pointed at my phone so she got the message. I quickly typed:
Want to sneak out so we can actually talk? I know a place we can go.
She responded:
How do I get down? :)
I smiled and pointed to the lattice on the side of her house. It appeared strong enough to hold her tiny frame, so I was confident it was stable. A few minutes later and one whispered cuss word after I stepped on a shovel, we were on the ground together. It was hard to see in the dark, so I grabbed Aurora's hand. Smooth, I thought to myself. I knew the way my heart so I motioned her to follow me. We walked in silence down a beaten path to a small pond inhabited by a few frogs and not much else. It was far enough away from our houses that no one would hear what we said. I padded over to the docks that I had built with my dad when I was 8, smiling at the memory.
"I have so many memories at this pond," I finally spoke into the silence.
"It's beautiful out here," Aurora murmured through her smiling lips.
Once we reached the docks we stopped holding hands and sat, swinging our feet in the water. We sat in comfortable silence for a few moments, gazing at the stars while listening to the splashing of our toes breaking the perfection of the still water.
"I want to cut to the chase, Aurora, I like you," I whispered through the sounds of nature.
"I like you too," she whispered, but continued on, "The only thing is I'm starting to become friends with Emily, and I know you two have a past."
"We dated for 7 months last year," I offered despondently, "I eventually broke it off because I didn't feel anything for her anymore."
A case of love lost, as if there was any love in the first place. I knew I hadn't been in the relationship for much else other than the sex, just something to tide me over until I found my mate. I saw a glimmer of hope in Aurora that I could truly fall in love with her, and I wanted to explore this new sensation without Emily getting in the way any further.
"Do you feel anything for her now?" Aurora questioned.
"No," I replied simply, "I don't think I ever did."

Aurora's POV
With that I grinned inwardly and wondered what the future would hold. All I know right now was that I had to keep whatever this was a secret between them. An idea popped into my head and before I could stop myself, I exclaimed out loud, "We could see each other in secret."
"Okay," he agreed, and I smiled. Now this serious situation needed a little fun.
"This water seems really tempting, I might go in," John said.
"Are there any snapping turtles or fish that could hurt me?" I asked nervously.
"Hell no!" He yelled as I laughed.
Slowly we both started undressing and I couldn't help but notice his well defined abs as he lifted his shirt. He caught me staring and asked, "Enjoying the view?"
"You wish," I shot back, tossing my jeans to the side. As I pulled my top over my head, I could see that John was now staring at me. "Enjoying the view?" I quipped, using his own words against him. He laughed as he dove into the water and splashed around. A minute later, I joined him.
