Aurora's POV
"Are you a werewolf too?" I directed the question towards John.
"Yes, I am." He replied solemnly.
This doesn't make sense, I mean why did John pursue me if I am mated to Drew?
"I know you're probably wondering why I even went after you in the first place..." John trailed off, glancing nervously at Drew. He nodded and John took it as a sign of forgiveness. "You see, once you reach a certain age and you haven't found your mate, you find certain substitutes. Well, this is all coming out wrong, but really I was just waiting to find my mate. Now that I have, and you have, everything is fine."
I looked at him quizzically. Me, a substitute? Right. Not that I really care anymore, it is as if all my feelings for John were swept away by the tidal wave that is Drew. "Who is your mate?"
"Claire, I don't know if you met her at the party before but..."
"OH MY GOSH! Claire? She's a werewolf too? How many people in this town have the ability to run on four furry legs?"
Drew chuckled at my outburst before explaining, "A lot of people in this town are werewolves actually. I would say that there are three hundred under my control. The rest of the humans know that something is going on, but choose to ignore it. It is the way it has been for centuries."
Three hundred! That seems like a lot of people, or I mean wolves.
"Where do all these werewolves live?" I questioned.
"Most live around town, but about fifty live in the pack house." Drew replied.
"Where is the pack house?"
The boys looked at each other and seemingly communicated telepathically. They were discussing something without saying a word. Weird. After what seemed like a million years of deliberation, they broke their conversation.
"You can come with us, we'll show you." John beckoned. I figured, why not?
We all walked together to John's truck, but before we could reach it, Drew grabbed my hand and pulled me back.
"I'm just warning you, this might be a lot. Everyone will want to meet you, after all, you are their next Luna." he whispered into my ear, sending shivers down my spine. The simple intimacy of his close proximity was enough to send me trembling.
"I hope I can handle it," I whispered back, shooting him a smile.
The ride from John's house to the pack house seemed to go on endlessly. My head rest on the window as I watched the scenery fly by in a blur. Finally, we turned into a long paved driveway, flanked by tall, evenly spaced trees.
Behind the trees were majestic mountains, the ones that I could see from my house but now had a closer view. The fresh snow glistened on the peaks, even though Spring is beginning. We continued down the path for a few minutes in silence until we came upon a sight that took my breath away. I gasped at the sight of the enormous home before me, and turned towards Drew with questions in my eyes. He nodded and I peered back at the sight.
All around the home, people were milling around. To my right, there were numerous fights which appeared to be between wolves in training. I marveled at the sight of a tiny female's take-down of a muscled male. Right in front of us, a large garage opened, revealing maybe a hundred expensive cars. Two girls who I recognized from my school giggled and hopped into a red Ferrari before speeding off in the direction from which we had come. I am beginning to realize that a lot more people are werewolves in this town than I would expect. The car rolled to a stop, and Drew ran to open the door for me. He held my hand as I slowly began to slide out of the car, carefully placing my feet on the cobblestones. Our fingers wrapped more tightly together as I stood upright beside him. He squeezed my hand in reassurance, almost as if he could sense my hesitance. Is that something mates can do, sense each other's emotions? I wouldn't exactly know, I'm not experienced in the whole dating department. My constant moving around saw to that. Now that I can fully understand why we moved so much, I get my father's constant fear. I only hope now that we can stay here, that I can stay here, and find out what this whole mate thing entails.
I am pulled from my thoughts as we all begin to walk towards the mansion. John strides ahead of us, allowing Drew and I to have some space. I couldn't help but notice that everyone we passed bowed their head in respect towards Drew. I had almost forgotten how much power he holds in this pack. This revelation only seems to heighten my nerves, so I start to tense up.
Ever the empath, Drew feels my reluctance, and stoops to whisper in my ear. "Don't worry my mate, you are safe here. No one with ever touch you since you are mine." I flash my smile at him, but the butterflies in my stomach do not leave.
I do not know what lies beyond those doors, but I'll find out soon enough.
