It was that time of year again. The bonfire.
Every year my school held a bonfire to celebrate the end of a (great) football season. Everyone went and just sat around laughing with their friends or staying warm by the fire. I usually stayed home and watched a movie instead. I don't know why, but I've always found school activities boring.
But this year was different. I was going with Jane and John and......Luke.
Yes, Luke!!! He asked if he could join our group since his football buddies would be getting wasted. Luke never got drunk or really had liquor. Sure we have all had an occasional drink or 2 at a party, but I never got wasted. It's just so stupid.
Jane came to my house early to help me pick out an outfit for the "date", since my fashion style sucks, but there is nothing wrong with comfortable clothes. I'm not going to dress to impress if I'll be cold or uncomfortable.
"Done!" She said, showing me my outfit In the mirror.
"Wow, I actually look good." I said in disbelief.
"All you needed was a little bit of help, you look pretty enough already!"
That was why I loved Jane, she was always so positive, even if others weren't, plus she has great style.
"Let's go!!!" She squealed running down the stairs.
"Let me just get my coat and keys." I hollered down. I grabbed my keys and headed down.
*********bonfire**********
"Hey John, hey Luke!" Jane said, giving John a kiss. They looked so happy together, I want a relationship like that one day.
"Hi Jane, hey Alexis. You guys look pretty tonight."
Thump, thump
"Thanks," I said awkwardly.
"We're gonna go grab some food. Want anything?" Jane asked
"No thanks, I already ate." Like replied.
"Same, but you two go ahead."
"Ok, try not to have too much fun without us." She said, pulling John towards the food stand.
"Sooo...... Great job this year."
"Thanks. This season was awesome. Especially when Jared made that interception then ran it to the 10."
"Cool." I said even though none of that made any sense.
"So Alexis are you going out for the basketball team this year?"
"I don't think so. I'm just gonna stick to my studies and try to get a scholarship."
"You know, they give scholarships for basketball, besides Marcy broke her foot and they need a new point guard."
I was a pretty good point guard.
"Fine, I guess I'll think about it." Lie. "The only problem is trying to fit in the weekly therapist appointments." That part wasn't a lie, I really did have a tight schedule between the therapist and doctors and appointments. Plus my parents and brother on me all the time.
"Oh yeah.... So are you feeling better?" I could tell he was confused.
"Yeahhh....." I hope Jane gets back soon, this conversation was going nowhere.
"Heeeyyyyy, were back!!!!" Jane sang.
"Hey. So anything you wanna do at this awesome bonfire. " I said, my voice dripping with sarcasm.
"We should play truth or dare." John said. It was the first time he had said anything tonight.
"Yeah. Ok I'llgo first."
"Ok. Alexis truth or dare."
Truth, duh. Dares always ended with someone hurt.
"Dare"
"Ok. Hmmm..... I dare you to.... Kiss Luke!"
I gave her a wtf stare.
"Alright, let's get this over with."
"What, not excited to kiss the great Luke Hemmings." He said with a smirk as he leaned in.
As soon as our lips touched it was like fireworks.
He pulled away.
"Wow." Was all either of us could say.
"Well, would you look at the time. I gotta go!" I said, pretending to look at my watch. If I stayed there any longer Luke my figure out my feelings for him. "Jane do you wanna ride home?"
"No, that's ok I'll get a ride from John. See you Monday."
"K, bye." I said and bolted. As soon as I got in the car, I let all my emotion out. This was all happening to quick.
It's official - I, Alexis Hamelton, love Luke Hemmings.
