Consequences

I opened my eyes and scanned where I am: white walls, white bed, IV--wait, IV? I checked my arm; it's not attached to me anymore. I squeezed my eyes shut and remembered what happened... Lehi. Lehi's fine, I revived him. Wait, was it successful? I have to see him. I was about to get off the bed when aunt Alaura, uncle Amador and Ezra came in. I smiled at them, and aunt Alaura hugged me as soon as she was near me.

"Hi honey, how are you feeling?" she smiled.

"I feel better, how long have I been here that they've even cared to put IV on me?"

"You've been out for 2 and half days, Olivia. You can go home now." she answered.

"Two and a half days?" I shuddered; I didn't know that reviving Lehi would knock me out for almost 3 days. Where is he anyway? Why isn't he here? I looked at Ezra and he stared at me blankly. "How's Lehi?" I asked him, and the couple looked at each other as I wait for him to respond. "Well?"

"Lehi's great, he's doing fine. Not a scratch, you were successful with reviving him." I smiled upon hearing that, and I was filled with excitement to see him. I got off of the bed and walked towards the door but Ezra stopped me. "Where are you going?" he asked.

"Lehi's room, I want to see him."

"He's not there anymore. He was discharged yesterday." What?

"He was discharged yesterday? Did he drop by when he got out?"

"No, he didn't, and he's not going to." Why is he saying this?

"Why isn't he going to? Is there a problem? Is he mad at me?"

"No, honey, he's not mad at you in any way." aunt Alaura answered.

"Then why?"

"It's because he doesn't remember." uncle Amador answered in a clipped tone.

"He got amnesia? I thought he was great?"

"He remembers everything perfectly, Olivia," Ezra answered "everything but you--you and his memories with you." That can't be right, why? I shook my head in disbelief.

"It's the consequence of your action." uncle Amador answered my unspoken question "Every time we try to do something that would disrupt nature's balance; there would be consequences that come with our actions. When you tried to revive your pet bird, it died after a few minutes--consequence for what you did. Lehi's memory, the consequence for disturbing the balance on life and death."

"Aren't we a disruption on nature's balance? I mean, we're immortals, we don't die." I asked.

"We are, in a way. But you know that we exist so we can make sure that the balance can be preserved from time to time." I looked at aunt Alaura and all she did was frown and shake her head.

"I'm sorry Olivia," she said "but there's nothing that we can do bring his memory back." I wasn't able to say anything in return because this information hurt me too much. I was able to revive him, but my memory--our memories together--I wasn't able to. I pushed my back against the door and slid down 'til I'm sitting on the floor. I kept quiet for the next few minutes, and they didn't seem to mind. At least he's alive. I thought to myself. He might not be able to remember me, but I'm sure that he's alive.

"What about the people who knows about us?" I asked when I decided to break the silence.

"They won't remember a thing too" Ezra answered and I nodded. There's nothing that we can do anymore. I have to accept that. I'll just have to shut myself down, so I won't get hurt. There's no point in hoping that he'll remember me anymore. I walked out of the hospital with my remaining family and my best friend, following their lead. I plugged the earphones to my ear and listened to random music as I start to build up the walls inside me once more--to protect me from the pain of remembering Lehi. This is officially, my first heartache.
