"Today is about survival. If you get blasted, you're dead," Gobber explained the lesson's mechanics, "Quick, what's the first thing you're going to need?"
"A doctor?"
"Plus five speed?"
"A shield."
Hiccup, Fishlegs and Astrid stated their answers respectively.
"Shields. Go," Gobber repeated, confirming Astrid's answer correct.
Everyond scrambled for shields, finding them scattered around the ring. Snotlout and Young Macintosh were going after the same shield, but Snotlout held it first and used it to 'accidentally' knock Macintosh out.
"Macintosh is out!" Gobber announced.
"Your most important piece of equipment is your shield. If you
must make a choice between a sword or a shield, take the shield," Gobber stated.Hiccup was struggling to lift his so Gobber helped him and sent the boy running.
Ruffnut and Tuffnut stoof amidst a dozen shields. However, only one had a skull painted on it. They both grabbed it and fought over it.
The Gronckle took aim at the distracted twins. It shot its fire and the shield ws blasted out of both of their hands. The blasted shield struck Young MacGuffin, causing him to panic. The Thorston twins spun like tops and went down. Wee Dingwall went down with them.
"Tuffnut, Ruffnut, you're out!" Gobber called out, "MacGuffin and Dingwall, too," he sighed. Possibly disappointed with the heirs.
"What?" The twins muttered in unison, both of them dazed and confused.
The Gronckle scooped up a pile of rocks and swallowed them back. The teens gathered on the far side of the ring.
"Those shields are good for another thing. Noise. Make lots of it to throw off a dragon's aim," Gobber instructed.
The kids managed to take their weapons and began hammering on their shields. The Gronckle, on the other hand, shook its head at the clatter.
The teen targets became blurry and scrambled in the eyes of the dragon. It was working.
"All dragons have a limited number of shots. How many does a Gronckle have?" Gronckle continued.
"Five!" Snotlout answered.
"No, six," Fishlegs corrected him with confidence.
"Correct, six. That's one for each
of the recruits!""I really don't think my parents would--" Fishlegs' sentence was cut when the Gronckle shot his shield away.
"Fishlegs, out," Gobber said and Fishlegs broke into a panic.
Gobber spotted Hiccup hiding from the Gronckle's molten slugs.
"Hiccup, get in there!" He shouted.
On the other hand, Astrid was bouncing on her heels, ready to dodge a blast. Snotlout appeared, trying to hit on her.
"So anyway I'm moving into my parents' basement. You should come by sometime to work out. You look like you work out--" Snotlout's words were interrupted when Astrid cartwheeled out of the way, allowing a shot to shoot past her and hit Snotlout's shield. He was blasted onto his back.
"Snotlout! You're done!" Gobber announced.
Astrid rolled to a stop beside Hiccup, who stirred awkwardly, trying to look cool.
