Hungrily her nimble fingers slid beneath the top corner of the envelop where the glue had not been pressed, and with one fluid movement she… threw entire thing at me.

I struggled to catch it nearly dropping it to the floor, she stood statue still her shoulders straight and her eyes nearing frightened.

“What’s wrong?” I asked her looking down at the envelope in my hand.

“What if it’s one of those chain letter things? I don’t wanna get caught up in that shit!” She exclaimed crossing her arms defensively in front of her.

I sighed rolling my eyes at her, she was being childish again. “Who would send you a Chain letter to my house?” I asked her placing my hands on my hips.

She worried at her bottom lip, nibbling it between her teeth. She shook her head stepping away from the letter.

“You open it then.” She hissed waving her finger in my direction.

I glanced at my mother who shook her head at me, “She’s your friend.” She muttered before turning her back to me.

Heaving a heavy sigh I lifted the letter up and very delicately removed the flap on the back. The scent of fresh water lilies burst out filling the room. My mother looked up from her mail and turned to look at me her eyebrows furrowed in confusion.

I pulled out a neatly cut and fitted folded card from inside. On the front of the card once again in even more elegant calligraphy was scrawled, Invitation.

“You’re invited to something…” I said setting the envelope down on the counter.

Laya perked up her head rising, “Really? What is it?” She whispered slinking over to stand behind me.

Her breath was warm on my shoulder as she looked down at the card in my hands. The paper felt thick, and old. Like if I were to let it go then it would turn to dust and vanish.

Taking in a deep breath I suddenly felt like I was about to diffuse a bomb, open this card could be the red wire or blue wire one of which would blow all of us up. Swallow the tightness caused by Layas anxiety over the card I flipped it open and let out a heavy sigh.

“Ashlaya Mottle, you are invited to attend the O’Hallows Eve Masquerade ball Never-night. The party will begin at 11 pm and continue to the 13th hour, on October 31st. You are permitted one (1) guest. We look forward to your attendance, Sincerely Yours.” As I read the contents of the invitation a strange shiver ran down my spine making me gasp at the end.

Laya spun around me her eye bright and mischievous.

“You are so coming with me!” She shouted bouncing away from me coming to a skidding halt in front of my mother, “Unless of course… You don’t want her to?” she put it more of a question than a statement.

My mother’s face was stone cold and solid, it broke in a matter of seconds and she smiled shaking her head at both of us.

“Of course you can go, But I expect you both to be careful and not to do anything reckless. Understood?” Her eyes switched me as she pressed her words down around me.

I nodded my head assuring her I would make sure that nothing bad happened. I did not want to come home with the cops, explaining that to my mother would be a death sentence.

“Oh my god! We should bring Tirana and Notari!” Laya exclaimed spinning to look at me slapping her hands down on the counter.

I looked back down at the invitation and frowned, “It says one guest allowed, how are you going to get three in?” I asked her setting the letter down on the counter.
