He stopped at kissing and touching, when I finally stopped shaking Damien, glorious train of thought, got up from the bed and pulled out a long dark green dress for me.

It was a sheer fabric so it shimmered in the light that came off the fireplace. I didn’t know what he wanted me to do, I had wholeheartedly thought he was going to use me.

If his name really was such a big deal, if it was some super Achilles heel for him why would he tell me. He didn’t seem worried that I would run to the nearest lowlife and trade his name for my freedom. I pictured that scenario and somehow it ended with bad things happening to myself.

“Are you alright? You just went very pale?” His voice made me jump.

I realized I had been making faces while I imagined the scene, clearing my throat I shook my head and stood up. My legs crumpled obviously I was not ready to be moving. I looked down and saw dark hand prints appear on my skin like I had just washed away makeup.

“They’re just bruises. They will fade with time.” Damien laid the dress down on the bed as he crouched down next to me.

“Didn’t you say the brand is to protect me from being attacked?” I asked him.

He sighed, “Hallowfiers are less than human. They are violent, monsters that feed on fear, violence and death. They have no thought process, and follow the lead of their alpha the only one who has the ability to think past the primal. They are extremely powerful and plague every dimension.”

“So, they’ll kill me no matter what…” My voice was a squeak.

He leaned forward and grabbed my chin between his thumb and forefinger, “Not as long as I’m here. They won’t touch you again.”

“Why do you even care?” I sounded angry, why would I be angry he was being nice-ish.

“Because you are my responsibility, I won’t let others hurt you because you are near me.”

How responsible of him… “Why can’t I stand up?”

“They tried to kill you, just because I’ve been able to help your mind adjust doesn’t mean your body has adjusted as well. Physically you are not stable enough to move on your own. That’s why I’m still here, apart from keeping you out of their grasps.”

He gently lifted my right leg up and examined the bruises, “Can I please put some clothes on.” I shivered.

Damien’s eyes looked up slowly, “I’ve seen you naked, there isn’t anything I haven’t seen. Relax.” He sighed going back to looking at the bruises.

My face burned with embarrassment, he may be right but I was still a 17 year old girl who was freezing cold. If only I could kick him in the face. His hand slid up the back of my leg which moved him closer.

“Stop being a baby, I’m not going to do anything. I’m just looking to make sure they didn’t cut you. Their nails are normally laced with toxins, they can be fatal.”

My blood chilled and it was like the air around me tried to crush me to the floor. His green eyes narrowed in on something and he leaned closer.

“You still smell like lilies.” He whispered shutting his eyes completely.

“What?”

He looked up at me letting go of my leg, “Nothing, you’re fine I can’t find anything. You don’t smell sick.”

“You said I still smell like lilies, why?”

“It’s nothing probably the perfume from the letter I sent.”
