Chapter 9

Hey Matty (is it alright if I call you that?) -Sums

Matt ended up calling me when he got that text, and I answered the phone eagerly, but calm sounding.

"Hey Matt," I say, immediately pacing around my room.

"Hey Sums! What's up?" He asked, and I could detect a hint of eagerness in his own voice as well.

"Just relaxing actually. It's kinda nice to have a break from practice once in a while you know?" Oh no. What did I just say? This was Matt Smith I was talking to! He loved cheering!

"I know exactly how you feel," he replied. Phew. That was a close one.

We continued talking for a while, and somehow got on the topic of boyfriends and girlfriends, and him and Carly. Before I could stop myself, I blurted out:

"Does Jamie like you?" Matt was silent. I paused and waited for his reaction.

"She's always denied it but... I think she does. Why?" It was my turn to be quiet now. Is that why Jamie was tormenting me? Was it to be with Matt?

"No reason..." I said awkwardly, trying to change the subject. The conversation only got more awkward from there, and I eventually hung up claiming I had to get in the shower. Matt was definitely adorable, but it wasn't easy to talk to him about anything. I mean, I hardly knew him.

Then I peeled off my pajamas, took out my sloppy ponytail, and hopped in the warm shower to free my mind. It was hard to just say everything on my mind to a practically a stranger. I mean, in actuality, I didn't even know Peyton that well. She was super sweet, but could I really trust her? She was Jamie's best friend. Maybe she was helping Jamie torment me.

Thoughts swirled through my mind as I washed my hair and scrubbed my face. Technically, I had no proof that Jamie wrote the notes even though they fit perfectly with her insulting personality. But Peyton had only said that. Maybe Peyton was the real culprit here, and she was just playing me. Maybe it was the nice boy, Matt. Or maybe it was somebody I didn't even know...
