This time when I wake up I'm in my own home in my own bed surrounded by all my cheer stuff. The same white gauze bandage is wrapped around my waist and back, and when I move I can ever-so-slightly feel a tingle of pain.
My mom walks into my room carrying a platter heaping with waffles and sausages and bacon. The smell tickles my nose and I sit up to take a bite of it.
"Here ya go sweetie pie," Mom says, kissing my cheek. Dad follows with a glass of orange juice and a strawberry banana smoothie... My favorite. Dad places the glasses on my bedside table and Mom puts the platter on my lap.
"Thanks you guys." I say, reaching to give them a painful hug.
"You know that your friends Peyton and Eliza have been trying to contact you since 9:00 this morning." Mom says, picking up my cellphone and scrolling through some of the messages. I don't say anything and instead eat a piece of my waffle.
"How long without cheer, Mom?" I ask worriedly. She looks away and fiddles with a string on her sweater.
"Baby girl... They said at least a month... But it could be a lot longer. The crash wasn't good."
A MONTH?!
"Mom I'll have to miss the first competition!" I sit up and yelp. Mom rubs my upper back (where there's no bandage) and kisses the tip of my nose.
"What really happened...?" I ask quietly. An idea suddenly forms in my mind. Matt...
"Matt... He hit you sweetheart. He was rear ended and his car collided with yours and you tipped... He was fine but..." Mom looks away and wipes a tear from her eye.
I want to scream and cry and throw a fit. Matt hit me? But he said he'd always protect me... This was so twisted.
"Is he okay?"
"Yes. He just escaped before his car blew up." My face dropped.
"Mom I need to see him. Please." Mom nodded and followed Dad downstairs to the kitchen. I heard the phone click and guessed that they were going to invite Matt over. I shut my eyes and tried to forget about everything that had just happened in a matter of a few hours.
