THE HEMMINGS TWINS

CHAPTER 34

18 WEEKS AND 3 DAYS PREGNANT

I had dropped Dax off with Karen while I went to my doctors appointment. I hadn't felt her kick in a while and I was getting nervous so my midwife was making me come in just to make sure that everything was going okay and that she was growing.

I had been stressed lately. More and more rumors about Michael were coming out and more and more people were saying I was a bad mom because I didn't allow Michael to see Dax. I told Michael to stop posting anything having to do with Dax but he did anyway. Probably just to spite me.

"Is the father going to be involved at all?" My midwife asked again. She asked every time I came in just to see if anything had changed.

"No. She doesn't have a father." I said looking at the screen of the little baby who moved around and her heartbeat was strong and very clear on the monitor.

"Okay so you said you couldn't feel her moving. Try to exercise some more and get active so she'll be awake and moving around more." She said and I nodded. "She's just lazy. She's growing perfectly and everything seems good."

"And it's still a girl right?" I asked.

"Yes, it's still a girl." She laughed as she cleaned off my stomach and helped me sit up. "Call me if you have any questions." She said and I nodded as I grabbed my bag and I headed back off to Karens. By the time I got there he was asleep and she was making lunch.

"Would you like some lunch?" She asked.

"Sure." Even though I didn't talk to Michael as much as I would like and he wasn't in our lives, I still talked to his parents and they still made sure that me, Dax and Henley had what we needed.

"What did the doctor say?"

"Just to walk around more often. But Dax is always moving so I'm really not sure what she means but whatever." I said helping myself to a drink. "I'm gonna go check on Dax."

"He's in Michael's room." She said and I headed up the stairs. I didn't want to enter Michael's room. I didn't want to see where I'm sure he's brought loads of other girls. Or where we would to sleep. It smelled exactly like him, it was like the smell was trapped in here. The walls were bare. He must have taken down the naked girls for Dax's sake. He didn't need to be scarred from the first time he opened his eyes.

The guitar that sat in the corner of the room was gone, along with the hats that were usually sat on his dresser. The bed was made neatly beside where the two pillows laid beside my sleeping son. I sat on the bed gently making sure it didn't move to much to touch Dax's little hand. I still couldn't believe that he was one and he was walking and talking.

"No Mama." He whines rolling onto his stomach.

"I didn't mean to wake you." I whispered as I stood up. A picture frame of Dax was sat on his dresser, one that I gifted to Michael on father's day from Dax. I couldn't believe he actually kept it. He had a lot of pictures of Dax sitting on his dresser that weren't framed. I smiled as I looked through them. They were mostly of Dax when he was a newborn because that's mostly the time that Michael was around.

It was sad really, having my kids grow up without a dad. I knew I was going to struggle. I knew that I was going to need to ask for a lot of help. Youtube was bringing in decent money but I didn't always post videos and you can't get paid if you don't post the videos. I left Dax to lay in Michael's bed even though he was awake now. He would eventually make his way to the gated stairs yelling for me and Karen.

"Does Mike have a baby monitor up there? Should I buy one for your house?"

"It's in my room. I left it in there. I forgot." Karen said as she placed a bowl of meatballs in front of me. Dax only ate her meatballs and she usually made them on Sunday's and sent some home with me for him.

"Oh okay. He's awake just laying in Michael's bed." I answered as I ate. "How's he doing, by the way." I asked.

"From what I've heard he's doing good. You haven't heard from him?"

"No, we got into a fight last week and that was it." I wasn't sure if he still wanted custody of Dax or if he was going to sign the papers over to me but when I told Luke, he didn't seem to care.

"What happened?" She asked.

"I'm not really sure but I don't know if he wants to be in Dax's life either so I've just been waiting for the papers to come in the mail that he's signed over custody and I'm really scared." I said as I ate.

"Would you take Dax away from us if Michael does that?"

"No of course not! I want you involved as much as you want to be involved. The same with Michael. I would never force this on you guys I hope you know that and as much as I don't get along with Michael, you will always be Dax's grandparents." I commented.

It must have been hard for Karen. Michael was her only child and all of a sudden, he up and went away. But then I brought this little boy into the world who looked exactly like him and she was more than thrilled to welcome Dax into the family. But now Michael doesn't want to be a father and Karen must be afraid that I would take her grandchildren away from her. Being 20 and having two kids alone was scary, I needed her.

"I just wanted to make sure because as much as I try, I can't convince Michael to change his mind." I looked at her. Did she just confirm that Michael signed over the papers?

"Did he sign the papers?" I whispered looking at her. She slowly nodded her head as she slide the big envelope. I slowly opened it looking at what the letter said with Michael's signature at the bottom. He had signed over custody of Dax to me. I would no longer be getting child support and Michael would no longer have any say in anything I did with Dax.

I didn't want to eat anymore. I didn't feel like I had the strength to eat.

"I already called your mom and told her." I nodded my head. "We're here for you as much as you need us. I'll watch him for you while you work, no pay. I'll do whatever you need." I slowly nodded my head as I heard Dax shout with a cry at the top of the stairs. Karen got up to get him while I sat looking at the papers.

Dax quietly sat eating the left over meatballs in my bowl. His palms often hitting the table when he enjoyed the taste of the food. More and more teeth were growing in and he was enjoying trying all kids of food.

I put the papers away pushing them away from me as I cleaned Dax's face. I handed Karen a picture of Henley before putting the dirty bowl in the sink.

"I think we're gonna head out. Me and my mom are going to go shopping tomorrow and out to lunch if you would like to come." I said smiling at her.

"Sure." She smiled back. "I love you, little man." She said kissing him as he giggled and covered his mouth with both of his hands. I had changed him into the next step up carseat but I was planning to keep him rear facing for as long as possible. I buckled him in the car, driving home where my mom was waiting in the kitchen.

"So it's over?" She asked and I nodded. Whatever little hope I had left to get back together with Michael was gone. He didn't love me. Which is okay because I could easily get over a boy. But Dax would be growing up without a father. Henley would be growing up without a father.

"I need a job." I whispered. Youtube paid decent money but it wasn't enough to raise a family off of.

"I talked to dad. There's an opening in his office to be an assistant. It's getting coffee's and filing paper work but it's enough for now." My mom said and I nodded my head. "I can watch dAX ON Monday's and Fridays." She said. "And I'll help pay for daycare."

"Karen said she could watch him too." I said and she nodded.

"Dad wants you to go in on Monday to talk about that job offer. I'm sure you'll get it and if not, there's plenty of spots open as a bartender at the bar." I nodded my head changing Dax's diaper.

"I can't believe I'm a single mom." I said and I wasn't sure if anyone would date a girl, with two kids.
