[needs editing, a slightly mediocre poem]
tiger stripes
stretch marks line her hips
and bottom
she smiles and she laughs but
at home she traces the lines
and tries to wish them away
you will never see her in a bikini
bottom, until wishes are spent
and enough cream is rubbed,
she kneads so hard her skin
feels as if she is nothing but
cream and unconfident wishes,
and that is what she becomes,
filled with fake cheer and
yearning dreams curled around
her brain
everyday she stands in front
of the mirror and wants to love
them like everyone else does,
call them battle scars and proudly
bear them,
a tiger who's earned her stripes.
but she's only a cub, and she
doesn't love herself, no, she can't
when ugly scars line her skin
like dashes of white on a black
canvas
she is only a teenager who has
already received tattoos she wishes
could disappear with a thought
but imperfections don't leave easily,
and on goes the shorts
to escape judgement,
on goes the shorts
to escape the stares of others,
on goes the shorts
to escape her own distaste
she has never fought such a hard
battle against herself.
it is in this battle against herself
that she wins her badge of honor,
it is in this battle against herself
that she truly wins her
tiger stripes.
