A few months later, near the beginning of the last year at Hogwarts
-

It had been an amazing summer holiday that Malfoy was pleased to say he spent with Potter.
Harry had an amazing birthday with the Malfoy family, even earning himself some birthday sex from Draco when it was all over. But lately the Gryffindor boy had been very distant with him.
Today was the worst.

"Harry!" Draco called, quickly wipping his face as he gripped his mate's wrist.
"Let go, Draco!" He tried pulling his hand out of his grip, but Malfoy held on. He couldn't loose Harry.
Not now. Not ever.

"Harry, what's wrong? Please tell me." He didn't let go, letting his tears fall, matching Potter's face. The Gryffindor avoided eye contact, staring at the ground.

"You should know!" He shouted, voice shaking as he managed to break away from the blondie's grip.
"Don't tell me you believe all that bullshit that the school are saying. You're my mate, Harry. Why would I want to hurt you?"

"I don't know. But you did. Do you have any proof that you didn't cheat on me?" He risked a glance at the other's eyes which were filled with rage and sadness.
"No, but you should trust me!"
"How can I trust you, Malfoy? Just leave me alone."

Draco watched as Harry ran off, knowing it was going to be a lonely and short life for himself.
Potter had rejected him. He had to talk to Hermione, perhaps she could talk some sense into him. Harry hadn't ever been this mad or upset with Malfoy, even when he ordered him about.

He gulped as he walked into the library. He saw Hermione in the corner, comforting a figure he guessed to be Ron, due to amount of time they spent together.
But then he saw Weasley walk by him, sending him a glare.

Draco bit his lip as he approached Granger, seeing Harry crying opposite her.
"H-Hermione, can I talk to you?"
"Shove off, Malfoy!" Ron yelled as Potter stormed past him.
"Please, you have to believe me. 'Mione, you've done enough research on Veela's, you're the brightest witch in the year... Please, you know I wouldn't hurt him." He was pratically begging her, and nobody had saw a Malfoy plead before except Potter.

"Ron, go find Harry please and comfort him. Sit, Malfoy." Her tone was cold as she narrowed her eyes. Draco felt a tingle shoot down his spine; it was as if she could see straight through him.
He followed her orders as the red head pushed past.

"Rumour has it that Harry's not your mate, and you've been seeing someone behind his back." Her usual comforting tone returned in her voice, soothing the blond.
"Oh come on, why would I-"
"Because he destroyed your lord, Malfoy! After everything you've done to us and then when he defeats your Lord you claim he's your mate!"

The blond trembled at her yells, making her sigh and calm down.
"I'm not saying you're lying, but I think they're right."
He felt his blood boil and stood up, eyes shining a rare red colour that was different to all those other times.
He was upset, he was angry, but worst of all, he was ashamed.
Of himself, of everybody else and especially in Hermione. She always had a knack for being a know it all, so why didn't she know this? Why didn't she believe him?

"You think I'd sleep with Goyle? You think that dimwit is my mate? Then why have I done everything in my will to save Harry bloody Potter! I even broke my wing!" He shouted, yet lowered his voice when Madam Pince hissed at him and nearly kicked him out. That and the fact Granger was pratically cowering in fear.
"Look, I know I'm blessed to have Harry as my mate... I know he deserves better than a death eater like me. He's already rejected me, I can feel the pain growing. You were my last hope, but now I might aswell go and wait to die in my room. The one me and my mate shared. I don't want to put him in pain anymore. He'll stay alive, he's rejected me. He can't be my mate anymore because I'll be dead, and the evil bugger who started all of this will be happy."

He wipped a stray tear and crossed his arms, waiting for a response. Hermione opened her mouth but closed it, struggling to find words.
"Do you have proof?"
"Proof of what?" He spat, tapping his foot impatiently.
"That Harry's your mate."
"Do you want to see my broken wing again?" He hissed, straightening his robes as he felt a burning in his stomach, "It's hopeless. If you'll excuse me, I'll go and await death. Tell Potter I loved him."

He walked down the hallways of Hogwarts, earning wierd looks as he choked back his sobs.
He wanted to tell Severus, but he knew his godfather.
The professor would force Harry to be with Malfoy so he could stay alive, but Draco didn't want forced love. He didn't need it.
He couldn't tell his parents because his father would make sure Harry died with him. He didn't want Potter to be put in danger either.

The way he saw it was if Harry accepted to be his mate, he'd feel any pain Draco felt, meaning death too. However, if he rejects, whether it be at the beginning or after, he wouldn't feel it.
He fell back as he walked into somebody, too deep in his thoughts.
"Draco?" He mentally groaned as he realised it was Snape.

He got up and brushed himself off.
"Y-yes?" He cursed under his breath, hearing his own voice crack.
"Why are you crying?" It was his same dull and boring voice, but it was filled with concern which shocked the boy.
"No reason."
"Is it Potter? He just stormed past looking the same." He raised an eyebrow as Malfoy burst into tears.
"N-nothing to do with that git, sir."

"Really?"
"Hm."
"Then why aren't you with him?"
"All due respect, profesor, but I don't see how that's your business."
"Well I am sorry for caring about my only godson." He hissed, pulling Draco into an empty classroom and away from all the odd sniggers and looks they were getting.
"Please just leave it alone," The blond mumbled, "Thanks for being such a great godfather."
He turned around, heading out the door until Severus' words made him think twice.

"If you don't tell me, Potter will be getting a month of detention and your father will be hearing about this."
The Slytherin student almost immediately sprung back into his seat.
"They think I cheated on him with-with Goyle."
His godfather's disgusted face matched his own, before the younger boy fell to the floor clutching his stomach and screaming. The pain had become to much to hold back.
"That means he-"
"Rejected me, yes! Yes! Just take me back to my room so I can die in peace!" He shrieked, whining slightly.

"How long ago?" He asked, giving Draco a pain relieving potion.
"About an hour."
"So we still have 23 hours left. Let me get Granger, don't move."
"No!"
He was ignored as Snape left in a hurry.
Groaning, he picked himself up and dragged himself to his room.
When he got in, he wasn't suprised to see that Harry wasn't there, crushing his last bit of hope.

He quickly got a quill and started writing a note to his parents.

Dear Mother and Father,
Thank you for everything you've every done for me, you're the best parents I could have ever wished for.

I'm sorry that I couldn't do anything right and screwed up a lot. I hope you can forgive me.

I forgive you for everything you've ever done to me, although I most likely deserved it. I love you.

Love from
             Draco

He walked to the owlery, blocking out the burning passion in his lungs as he thought back to him and his mate.
Sending off the letter, he walked back to his room, shaking a bit.
What would his parents think?
He'd never wrote a letter like that before to them.
He'd never even told his dad he loved him.

He gulped as he pushed open the door leading to their bedroom, seeing their bedsheets in a mess from last night, and Potter's Gryffindor scarf laying on it.

Smiling weakly, he brushed his hand over it, catching something between his fingertips. He glanced at the piece of parchment and read the tidy and perfect handwriting slowly.

Draco,
I have a plan. Meet me in the Gryffindor common room.
