After breakfast, we were called to the main square of Olympus. A large open area, mainly for dancing, was now filled with the campers from Camp Half Blood. There was a large and elegant water fountain in the center, a mini statue of each god or goddess was engraved inside as the water poured from a bowl above their heads.
They must love looking at themselves.
I stood next to Nathan and Clare within the crowd of demigods. The gods stood in front of us, lined up on a few of the bottom steps to the domed-throne building. They were human sized, so it was less freaky.
"As you mortals know, Olympus is a time for newcomers to be claimed.", Zeus began speaking, his electric eyes searching the crowd. I felt like he could turn all of us to dust within a second.
"So here is your first opportunity.", he began explaining a game.
I'll give it to you straight. There's a red and blue team, and each team wears a vest in their color. Everyone is given a crossbow, but you're not limited to it. Once a weapon hits your vest, your color disappears and you're out.
Once one team is left standing, it becomes a free for all. There is only one winner.
"There are no limits on Olympus. No rules. Only one winner, and that winner gets....uh...", Zeus looked over at the other gods for any ideas.
"Claimed.", he spoke.
A voice came from the crowd of campers.
"But what if you're alrea-"
"DO YOU DARE DEFY THE GODS?", Zeus shouted, his voice silencing all of Olympus.
Talk about mood swings.
"Game begins once Nike blows the horn.", Zeus gestured to a younger lady with white wings and golden eyes. In one hand she held a large cornucopia shaped horn.
The campers raced off, and Clare tugged me along with Nathan.
We pushed through the crowd to get to the stacks of vests, but there was only a red one and two blue ones left.
I gave Clare a stealthy wink and handed her and Nathan the blue vests.
"We'll see who's the winner.", I teased, pulling on a bright red padded vest. It did not go well with my orange t shirt.
Clare and Nathan looked at each other smiling, and I felt weird.
"All I'm gonna say is good luck. You'll need it.", Nathan picked up a crossbow, and a quiver filled with sharp metal arrows.
"Is this safe?", he asked, his blue eyes judging the spiked arrows.
"That's why we got Apollo here.", Clare pointed to a really handsome man within the crowd of demigods who were pulling on vests and checking out crossbows. He had golden hair and blue eyes. He wore a striped yellow and black referee jersey. Zeus probably forced him to wear that.
"He's hot.", I mumbled, and Clare punched my shoulder.
"Get outta here before the horn blows. I'm not holding back for anyone.", she smirked, her grey eyes a little too fierce. I decided to take her advice.
There were some thick woods near the village where other creatures and immortal heroes lived. I wondered what it was like to live on Olympus.
I bet it's like the Florida of Greek vacation spots.
I noticed the demigods splitting up, some of them huddling together with a plan.
Again, I was not really a social person.
I dived into the woods, which were breathtaking. Dryads pranced around, flowers bloomed bright, and there were used targets on some trees that Apollo might use for arrow practice.
A loud and deep sound sent Olympus quiet once more. The horns had sounded, and the game has begun.
Woah. This is some Hunger Games stuff right here.
"Well, look who we got.", Will's voice came from behind me.
This is literally the hundredth time people have come up behind me.
I spun around and found Nico with Will, both of their vests were red like mine.
"I kinda like my team now.", I smirked.
Nico was dressed in his usual black outfit, and he waved a sword around, while Will used his casual bow and arrow.
I could only imagine what the Athena and Ares kids are up to.
"We're about to get the Stolls for switching the milk at breakfast with watered down toothpaste.", Will said.
"We could use a little extra assistance.", Nico continued, taking my hand and shadow traveling us.
We landed behind the shadow of a small shop in the village. I was dizzy, and stumbled backward into the ground.
"You get used to it after a while.", Will said, and peeked out the side of the building.
I picked myself up and joined him.
The Stolls were in blue vests across a stone made path, bargaining with an old man at a butcher shop to buy some fish.
I don't even wanna know what they were planning.
Demigods ran around in village, shooting and taking each other down. It was only a matter of time before someone from the blue team found us.
"What's the plan?", I asked.
Before Will could answer, something rubbed against my leg.
A shockingly loud bark came from a small wiener dog at my feet.
Is there anything Olympus doesn't have?
"Shush!", Will said, looking over at the wiener dog. It was all black except for its paws and face, which were brown. It's tiny little tail wagged excitingly as it began hopping around me.
BARK!
BARK!
"Make it stop!", Nico said, crouching down to its level.
The wiener dog growled and hid behind my legs.
BARK!
BARK!
The Stolls spun around and noticed us.
"EVERY MAN FOR HIMSELF!", Nico shouted and shadow traveled.
Nico shadow traveled back the same instant, grabbed Will, and then disappeared again.
I see how it is, Nico.
An arrow came flying toward me, and I dove behind the shop. There were too many demigods around to make it to the forest, and the wiener dog wouldn't stop biting my pants.
"Think quick!", a German accent spoke.
"I am!", I responded.
"Can we get food first?"
I realized that the voice wasn't in my head. And that it had a German accent.
I looked down at the wiener dog.
"Maybe some Buffalo Wild Wings?", he suggested.
"You have got to be kidding me.", I sighed, and the Stolls appeared behind the shop. I grabbed Mr.Talking Dog and dodged what look like a fish attached to the arrow they shot at me.
I decided to make a run for it, my heart pounding as arrows flew past my head. I dove into the trees, pulling the wiener dog to my chest, and rolled down the slope of beautifully grown grass. I destroyed a few flower bushes on the way down.
Please don't kill me, Demeter.
Once I lost the Stolls, I set the talking dog down, and laid against a tree.
There should be only half of the demigods left by then.
The talking wiener dog bounced around in the candy scented grass.
"My favorite wings are honey barbecue but I really will eat anything.", he hopped onto my lap, tapping his small feet against my left thigh.
"Dogs aren't suppose to talk.", I told him, and he did another twirl before sitting down on my lap.
"Well, I am a magical dog. The name's Gerald. General Gerald.", he spoke as if he was the toughest pup around.
"General? Not to burst your bone but you're really small.", I said, patting his small head.
He stood up and growled at me.
"I'll have you know that lord Ares has promoted me to Second-In-Command for cavalry.", he stood tall, but I knew he was bluffing.
"My apologies, Gerald.", I looked at the cross bow in my hand.
"Now, goddess, what is-"
"Why is everyone calling me that?", I asked, cutting him off.
"What? I merely called you a goddess-"
"Yes, that's exactly it. I'm not a goddess.", I hoped Gerald was smart enough to get what I was trying to say.
"Technically, you are a goddess. Most monsters and other immortal souls can feel your power. In addition to that, you bleed golden ichor.", he spoke, pointing one of his front paws to a drop of gold on my neck. An arrow had scratched me while I was making a run for it.
I wiped it away with my arm.
"I don't have any powers, and I still have no idea why I bleed golden blood."
Gerald hopped up on a low lying branch next to me.
"I wish I had the answer, but I don't. I do have a way to fix this, however."
"How can I fix this?", I asked.
"By buying me honey BBQ wings."
I pushed him off the branch and he fell with a small thud.
He squealed and stood up again.
"Ekelhaft menschlichen!", he cursed in fluent German. I was glad I couldn't understand him.
The grass nearby began to rustle, and I stood up, grabbing the crossbow and Gerald.
He sniffed the air, and barked.
Clare and Nathan came running out from behind a tree, and I took a shot with the crossbow, barely missing Nathan.
Then I ran, dodging their arrows.
"There is a pond nearby! We can hide there!", Gerald shouted, his tiny body wiggling in my arm.
I spun behind a tree, and shot another arrow, this time hitting Clare in the chest. The blue color of her vest changed into a bright white.
"Get her, Nathan.", she smirked before I took off, Nathan at my tail. More like Gerald's tail.
I realized then why he hadn't shot any arrows. He was out of them.
He ran with a sword, but he had no chance to catch me. I was too fast.
"Alright track star, slow down!", he shouted, and Gerald bit my arm. He was signaling me to turn right.
I ran a sharp right, and ran through thick bushes and branches, right into gorgeous pond.
The cold water sent a shock through me as it swallowed me up, and I was disoriented. Gerald had slipped from my arm and vanished. I struggled to retrieve my sense of direction as I sank slowly.
You're not gonna drown.
I spun around in the water, my chest began aching for air.
Okay, you're totally gonna drown.
Before I could panic, hands wrapped around me. Nathan pulled me to the surface, and onto the shore. I caught a glimpse of Gerald rolling in the grass.
"Do you know how to swim?", he asked, and I punched him as I gasped for air.
"Well, go ahead.", he stood up and backed away, opening his arms wide.
"What?"
"Shoot me. You gotta be claimed. You gotta figure this whole goddess thing out.", he said, his brown hair matted and dripping water. I could see Clare pop out from the trees in the background, and she watched intensely.
I aimed the crossbow at Nathan's chest, and right as I pulled the trigger, I turned the crossbow and I shot myself.
That would've been an epic suicide.
"You're not claimed either.", I smiled at Nathan, and his face turned bright red. I doubt he blushed.
My red vest drained to a pale white.
Clare joined us, pushing her blonde beach hair away from her face.
A sudden holographic symbol appeared above Nathan's head.
"I knew it!", Will's voice called out as he and Nico stepped out of the woods. Both of their vests were white like mine.
The symbol above Nathan's head was a sun.
"I knew you got your looks from Dad.", Will chuckled, elbowing Nathan.
Clare smiled at me, and put an arm on my shoulder.
"You thought Apollo was hot...", she began laughing, and I rolled my eyes.
"Chicken wings.", Gerald's German accent had shut everyone up.
"Yes, that sounds nice right now.", he fell over onto his back, expecting a belly rub from someone. My friends faces were more concerned that the wiener dog had a German accent rather that him being able to talk.
"I just found him like that. Don't ask me why he talks.", I raised my arms, and we all began walking out of the woods together.
Nathan, son of Apollo. Sounds weird.
So, we were all cool. Nobody bothered us, and we actually did get Gerald the chicken wings he wanted.
The End.I really wish it could've ended right then and there. But with demigods, things had to get a whole lot worse.
