That night we were able to choose our cabins. I shared a bunk with Clare, and Nathan laid in the one next to us.
General Gerald slept at my feet, every once in a while he'd sleep talk.
"Hähnchenflügel", he'd say, and roll around as he snored.
I slept like a rock that night, but not without my dreams. The earth was black, the nighttime taking over. Suddenly, the ground began to shake and cracked open a large canyon in the bare earth. A red light had escaped from the canyon, and the shadowy black figure was standing at the edge. I could only catch phrases of what the deep voice was saying.
"We will make her mortal..."
"...use her...no longer."
A sudden shriek came from the dark woods that surrounded the canyon.
A woman ran toward me, screaming.
"Save her!"
"Save my child!"
She had fallen, and was being dragged back into the woods by an unknown force. I shook myself out of my daze, and ran to help her.
"Save her!"
She held out a hand for me to grab, but I missed it as the force tugged her away.
She was swallowed back into the darkness of the woods.
"TERRA!"
The voice suddenly had a German accent."Terra!", Gerald whispered, and my eyes opened.
I was standing inside a gorgeous grey palace, with tapestries and artwork surrounding the giant main room.
"Do you know what you've walked into?", he whispered, biting my blue pajama pants.
"We have to leave, now!", he yelled in a whisper, trying to do some damage with his tiny little body.
I was too fixated on one of the tapestries.
I tilted my head and approached it, my bare feet cold from the floor. It was of the gods sitting around a hearth at night time, some of them with permanent smiles on their faces, and others had tears and looks of despair.
In the background, however, was the black figure carrying a little bundle that I saw in one of my past visions.
Gerald was running around my legs, trying to get my attention. I held a hand out to the tapestry, delicately placing it over the black figure. When I took it away, two golden eyes appeared within it.
I was startled and stepped back, knocking into a vase on display. It fell over and crashed into the polished floor.
I stood still, my eyes wide as silence followed the crash.
"That's it. It was nice knowing you Terra. You broke one of Athena's vases. You're dead.", he whispered in a panic. That's when I realized there were statues and tapestries of Athena all around the palace.
Yeah, I'm screwed.
Athena suddenly appeared next to a tapestry, fully dressed in armor at four a.m.
It must be hard to sleep in that.
She didn't look mad, but I really couldn't tell with her deep and stormy grey eyes.
I was hoping she'd just snap and turn me into a pile of dust already.
"Why have you wandered into my palace?", she questioned, approaching me. I felt Gerald hide between my legs, shaking with fear.
"I...I was sleep walking...", I said, avoiding her eyes.
"So you decided to destroy one of my vases?", she asked, and I felt like I was about to explode. I looked down at the broken vase, then at the tapestry.
"That tapestry. I've seen the black figure in it.", I blurted out, avoiding questions about the vase and pointing to the tapestry.
She tilted her head, and I knew exactly what she was doing. She was acting like she didn't know what I was talking about.
"You were in my dreams, too. You've been speaking to me, you're the one with the grey eyes, and you know exactly who I am.", I said, but instantly regretted it as she raised her eyebrows.
"I do not know exactly who you are, but I do know that you are more powerful than I imagined.", she began pacing, walking by each tapestry. She waved me to follow.
"Do you have any idea at least about who I am?", I asked, hoping for some answer.
"Typhon.", she said quietly, turning to face me.
"Typhon?", I asked. I'm a bit rusty with Greek Mythology.
"You can not compare Typhon to any monster or god we know. He was one of the most powerful giants we have ever attempted to defeat, and we had almost lost.", she spun to meet my eyes, and this time I didn't turn away.
"He is also a god, the son of Gaia and Tartarus, who are both considered gods...", she paused for a moment, and maybe in that moment, I could see that the goddess Athena was frightened. And she's like, never suppose to be scared.
"Once you arrived on Olympus, the gods have felt his presence rising. We have no way of stopping him. His time away in Tartarus possibly proves him to be much stronger now, and much more dangerous.", she spoke as she remembered the past war against him.
"So I might have some connection with him?", I asked.
Athena nodded, and I noticed how much Clare resembled her mother.
"I don't just think you have a connection with him...I believe you have the power to stop him.", she said, and then I was truly confused.
"That doesn't make any sense. If Zeus struggled to destroy Typhon, what makes you think I'll even make a dent in him?"
Athena's grey eyes began shifting to General Gerald, then back at me.
"The gods are finally noticing the powerful force that entered Olympus once you came. I can't say this against all gods, but eventually they're going to use you, Terra. Zeus cannot find out, because he will use every chance to get rid of you. You are much more stronger than him.", she turned away, not wanting to accept what she was saying.
"But I'm not even immortal.", I countered.
"You do not need to be mortal to have power. Yes, you are able to be psychically injured, but that does not matter in the concept of power. It's all in blood, Terra. Your blood.", she lashes a small knife too quickly to counter, and cut one of my arms.
I backed up in alarm, holding the gash with my hand as golden ichor dripped from my wound.
"What was that for?", I asked, wincing.
"Just to prove your blood is golden ichor. Some part of you is still immortal.", she looked at me intensely. I felt my wound close up and heal as I looked back at her.
"If you still have golden ichor in you, it means you were born immortal."
"And whoever my parents were made me mortal....", I added.
"They made you mortal so they could exterminate you at any time.", she finished, and suddenly a clearer picture was drawn in my head.
Exterminate me. Sounds like I'm some type of petty bug.
"Do not worry Terra! With me by your side and an unlimited chicken wing lunch, I won't let anyone hurt you.", Gerald said proudly, obviously trying to impress Athena.
She raised an eyebrow at Gerald, and I shrugged.
"About your dream, Terra, what did you see?", she asked, and I explained to her the canyon in the earth, the deep dark figure speaking, and the crazy woman being pulled into darkness. I could feel Athena getting a little uncomfortable once I mention the woman, but I dismissed it.
"The black figure has been disturbing Apollo as well. A prophecy will come soon...", she sighed, and looked over to the broken vase on the floor.
"You might as well keep that.", she said.
Hey, I actually took it. It was a cool lookin' vase.I had a hard time sleeping after that. I returned to my cabin and laid back on my bunk. Gerald instantly fell asleep, but I kept tossing around. I wasn't thinking about Typhon and whatever's going to happen next. I was thinking about my mom. Her memory loss hadn't really hit me until after the day's events. I'm not much of a crier, but I guess I sniffled a couple of times and Nathan heard it.
"Terra?", he whispered quietly, and I refused to turn around.
I sniffled again, blinking away my watery eyes. Even if she wasn't my real mom, she was my mom. She took care of me and put up with me all those years. All those years she kept me safe. And now all those years were erased from her memories.
I know a lot of demigods lose their mortal parents, but I think this was much worse. The fact that my mom will one day pass away, never to remember who she took care of for fifteen years.
I felt a tear roll down my face.
She looked happy without me.
I swallowed the lump in my throat, embarrassed with myself.
A soft hum began calming me down, and I spun around. Nathan was laying in his bed, his face towards me. He was singing quietly to me, a song called Let Her Go.
His voice was angelic and soft, and I yawned. Apollo children really have a power with singing.
I felt my mind drift off and I fell asleep.
Thank you, Nathan.
