Chapter 8: Crush Session
I drive out the school parking lot and call Kamaal. Ever since I read his note, I had butterflies in my stomach. I had no idea that Kamaal felt the same way I did. The phone rings and rings and eventually I get his voice mail. I hang up the phone and call him back again. This time he answers on the third ring.
"What's good Chris?
"Nothin, just on my way back home from school.'"
"Damn bruh, you got four wheels and I beat you home? Somethin is wrong with that picture."
I roll my eyes and laugh at his comment.
"Shutup big head, I had shit to take care of."
"True, but my lil sis is about to come home and I gotta prepare her lil after school snack. I'll get at you later."
"Ok cool."
Kamaal hangs up the phone and I receive another call. This time it's from my mom
"Hey mom." I say as I immediately hang up the phone
Chris where the hell are you at?"
"I'm almost around the corner, why wassup?"
"Ummm why the hell is Myra and Trey in my kitchen, all in my snack cabinet? Did you tell these heifers I went grocery shopping?"
I hear Myra and Trey in the background arguing over who's getting the last Oreo cookie.
Chris: Uhhhh I-
Mom: Boy hurry up and get yo ass here before you miss out on your weekly munchie session
I hang up the phone and pull up to my house. I take the keys out the ignition, grab my backpack and head inside. I walk in the kitchen and see chip bags, candy wrappers, and soda cans all over the table. Myra is in the snack cabinet, and Trey is in the refrigerator.
"Trey check and see if there is any ice cream in the freezer. I don't have anymore rollover minutes to be waiting on Chris."
I clear my throat and both of them jump. They stop what they're doing and give me a "this isn't what it looks like" kind of look. Trey and Myra would come over after school every Friday. Mom would go grocery shopping, and we will eat all the snacks. We would also play board games and watch movies. This was our tradition since middle school.
"So y'all hungry hungry hippos couldn't wait until I got home to start crush session?" I ask them with my arms folded.
"Hell no, you were taking forever and a year to get here, so we just took it upon ourselves to go ahead and start. Ain't that right Trey?"
I look over at Trey and he has a mouth full of ice cream. Hours go by and we make our own ice cream sandwiches. We bake real big cookies, put 3 scoops ice cream in the center, and put another cookie on top. It's a my own lil invention. As we're eating in the living room, Trey and Myra decide to bring up the note again.
"Chris, did u ever read the note Kamaal gave you?" Trey asks as he stuffs his face with oreos.
I stop eating and start smiling
"Judging by that smile on his face, I'm guessing he did." Myra says
"It's about damn time!!! Didn't I tell you it was gonna answer questions for you?"
"It really did. I had no idea he felt the same way I did." I tell them
"See and all you had to do was man up and talk to the boy." Myra says
"Shiy...he can barely talk to him without stuttering. You should've seen how long it took him to read the note. He was holding it, and practically sweating." Trey says as he laughs at me.
"Awww Chrissy's first love letter!!! How sweet!!!"
Trey and Myra look at each other, and Trey starts singing. Myra adds on by ad libbing and beating her fists on the table.
"It was the first time in my life that I had ever felt this way inside, and I kneeeeeeew that it was real, it was the first time time."
"Just like the snow fall coming down in June, impossible but it could be true, and I kneeeew that it was real it was the first time!!!" Myra sings as she stands up on the couch and takes over the song.
"Gosh I hate y'all!!!"
"Awww Chris, lets not be bitter!" Myra says
Hours go by and we continue eating and eventually start watching a Tyler Perry collection. We're in the middle of Madea's Big Happy Family, and a knock comes at the door. It's 10:45, who could be knocking at this hour? I get up with a bag full of Chips Ahoy cookies and open the door. On the other side of the door it's none other than Kamaal.
