Small Town Southern Charm

Chapter Five

 Johnny and I ended up at the bonfire, all we did at my house was sit there awkwardly after it got dark. Johnny said he was up for going to the bonfire so we headed over around 10.

When we got there people were everywhere, I thought it was going to be a small thing. I should have known better though, it was Kenny. Kenny always had to have a ton of people at his place when he had a 'get together'.

"You sure it's cool I came?" Johnny asked.

"Yeah, my brother told us to come over. Speaking of him, there he is." I smiled.

I think Johnny had my little joke from earlier in his head because he looked a little nervous. Thomas was the most chill person I had ever met though.

"Hey sis. Does Josh have a twin brother we didn't know about?" Thomas asked.

"Johnny." Johnny introduced himself while laughing at Thomas.

"Nice to meet you. Damn, you look just like her friend Josh."

"He's Johnny's cousin." I smiled.

"Where is 'ol Josh tonight?" Thomas asked.

"I don't know actually. I think he had to work."

"Well, ya'll have a good time. The drinks are over there." Thomas told us before walking away.

"Your brother isn't like any other girl's brothers I've met." Johnny spoke quietly as we stood by the fire.

"Is that a bad thing?" I smiled.

"No, not really. That means he won't give me a hard time when I'm with you all the time."

"And why would you be around me all the time?"

"I don't know I think we'll end up good friends." He smirked.

After a couple of shots of Jack Daniels both of us were a little tipsy. I sat on the ground barely able to hold my eyes open while Johnny laid his head in my lap and watched the sky.

He is really cute from this angle. I thought to myself. Those eyes are like glass shining from the sun. Oh, crap. He caught me looking.

"Like what you see?" Johnny slurred.

He lifted up to where he was sitting in front of me. He smirked at me as he sat there looking at me. I caught myself beginning to lean in and just as I was about to kiss him.

"Tara! There you are!" Jody yelled out.

"What? Why are you here?"

"It's Josh, we need to go."

"What about Josh?"

"He was in an accident. Just come on."

I began feeling a little woozy but I knew I couldn't be passing out there. I needed to get to where Josh was and fast.

"Are you coming?" I heard Jody ask Johnny.

"Yeah, yeah." He slurred.

I think he was a little more tipsy than me. He seemed more high than anything and there was no weed there.

At The Hospital:

"Where's Josh?" I asked his parents.

"He's in the back no one can go back there yet." His mom told me soothingly.

"I'm going to get you two a coffee." Jody told me and Johnny.

What seemed like hours passing by was only ten minutes. The nurse finally came out and said that the parents could go back. I sat there with tears threatening to escape. I was so scared, terrified actually.

"Taralyn you all can go on back." Josh's mom told me.

"Johnny and I will be back in a minute. We'll give you two a minute together." Jody told me.

I walked back to where Josh was and when I seen him that was the end of a dry face. I couldn't stand seeing him laid up in that hospital bed like that.

"Tara, is that you?" I heard Josh croak.

"Yeah, yeah. I'm here." I grabbed his hand.

"Thanks for coming." He tried to move over a little but ended up yelping in pain.

That yelp of pain made me cry even more. I was kneeling down beside him holding his one hand with both of mine, crying into his arm.

"Hey." I heard Jody.

I wiped my tears quickly and got up off the floor. Johnny stood behind me awkwardly.

"What happened Josh?" I asked.

"I..I was on the way home from work and some asshole pulled out in front of me. I was going too fast to stop so I swerved causing the car to hit a tree." Josh mumbled.

Josh was dozing in and out of sleep so I decided that it was time we all left the hospital for the night. I hated leaving my best friend like that.

"I'll be back tomorrow, Josh." I told him before kissing his forehead.

On the way to my house it was kind of quiet besides the low volume of the radio in Jody's car. She was taking Johnny and I to my house and we were just going to stay there for a while. Jody dropped us off and went back home, she seemed to be in a rush.

"Would you want to go to the movies with me tomorrow?" Johnny asked.

I have to, I have to get this thing on the road.

"Yeah, I mean in the morning I have to go see Josh. As soon as I leave there we can go for sure." I answered.

I wanted the morning to hurry and get here. I wanted to go see my best friend.
