I didn’t text JoAnna back right away, I didn’t really know how to. I showed Josh the text once we got to my house as I went up to change into some clean clothes. When we got to the house, Thomas was sitting in the living room on the phone with someone. He hung the phone up when I walked in and he got up to hug me.
“How’s she doing?” He asked.
“Not good, Thomas, not good at all.” I buried my face into his chest.
“Do you think it’ll be okay if I go see her?”
“Yeah, she’d love that. You can ride with us if you want.”
“Actually I was thinking about going over there now then heading home.”
“Oh, okay. That’s fine. We’ll be there later but if you leave before we get there, I’ll see you soon.” I said before hugging him tightly once more.
“Yeah, I’ll be back soon.”
“Okay, well I’ll see you.”

I ran up to my room and changed as quickly as I could so that I could get back to Jody. After I changed we made our way back to Jody’s place, I couldn’t wait to get there and tell her who had texted me.
“Tara, it’s going to be okay. She’ll get through this, we’ll get through this.” Josh told me as we pulled into the parking lot outside of the apartment building.

As I got out, I noticed that Thomas’ vehicle was still there and I knew something was wrong because it had been almost an hour since he left the house. I walked quickly in the room to see what was wrong, Thomas was pacing the floors like he was about to go crazy. I walked over to him to see what was wrong.
“The nurse said she doesn’t think she’ll live through the day.” Thomas told me.

When he said that I ran back to where she was she looked so weak, so tired. I laid beside her and just cried.
“Tara…” Her voice broke.
“Yeah, I’m here.”
“When I die, at the funeral I want you to…” She stopped to drink some water which I had to hold for her. “Please, wear that red dress with those heels.”

I began crying because I knew exactly what she was talking about. Before graduation we went and bought dresses for the ceremony, we got matching dresses and shoes because we thought it’d be cute.

“I’m going to be buried in mine, tell them that please.”
“Okay, I promise.”

I wanted to deny the fact that one of my best friends was dying but I knew that it was going to happen. I knew that it was a matter of time before she left me. I had to stay positive for her though, I had to let her know that I was going to try my best to keep myself together.

“JoAnna texted me today.” I whispered to her.
“For what?”
“She told me she was sorry and asked for me to forgive her. She said she wanted to be friends with me.”
“See. I told you. Where’s Josh?” She replied.
“In the other room.”
“Get him, please.”

I left the room to go get Josh for her when he seen me come in he knew that I needed him to come with me. He followed me into her room, holding my hand the entire time. He hadn’t been back there with her hardly any, I don’t think he could take seeing her in the shape she was in.

“Hey Jody.” Josh said quietly.
“Hi.” She smiled weakly. “Promise me something.”
“Sure.” He replied while looking at me.
“Marry her.” She told him while trying to lift her hand to point at me.
“I will. I will marry her.” By now Josh had tears in his own eyes.
“And promise me that through everything you will love her as much as you love her now.”
“I will. I promise.”
She didn’t say anything just nodded. I stood there bawling my eyes out behind Josh as he talked to her.
Through the day she got more and more weak, she was at the point that she couldn’t talk. I knew the time was coming all too quickly. The nurse had told us that everything in her body was slowly shutting down. All of us were sitting in her room with her, I was sitting right beside her holding her hand. She would give me a weak squeeze every now and then, I guess to let me know that she knew I was there. Her breathing was to a minimum and it was scaring the living hell out of me.
11:30 that night her hand let go of my hand and I knew. I knew that she was gone. Tears burst their way through my eyes and I couldn’t stop them. My best friend of so many years was gone. Josh was almost asleep when I starting screaming out Jody’s name.

“What’s wrong?” Josh asked wide-eyed.
‘She’s gone, Josh. She’s gone. No, she’s gone. No.” I cried.

He didn’t say anything just wrapped his arms around me and cried with me. The hardest part was seeing the people take her out of the room, I didn’t want to watch but there was nothing that could take my eyes away from her.
