Dan stood in front of the creamy wooden door that he knew too well as he rang the doorbell twice.

In less than seconds, his mother opened the door and then hugged Dan tightly. Dan hugged her back. He really had missed her. She let go after a minute or so.

"Come on in," she said.

Dan nodded as he took the bag that he ha dropped on the doorstep and went inside the house.

His dad was sitting on the sofa watching the telly and upon seeing Dan he opened his arms and Dan hugged him.

It felt so good.

"Where's Blake?" Dan inquired about his brother.

"At a friend's house," his mum said. "He will be back soon"

Dan nodded.

"So honey how has everything been with you?"

Dan let out an inaudible sigh but maintained a smile as he told them about his work. He didn't mention Phil at all not even once.

His parents didn't ever question about his lack of social life. or love life. They understood that Dan wasn't necessarily a people's person and they never forced him to be something he wasn't. He appreciated that a lot.

And then he asked them about their lives and it was the usual. His mum kept telling his dad to start jogging but he never listened. His mum had started flower arrangement on Sundays and his dad was forced to go with her and he complained about it and his mum complained about being dragged to the parties that his dad's friends would throw and how it would be so boring.

Despite them complaining and nagging about each other it was painfully obvious that they were in love and absolutely adored each other. Dan smiled a little at the thought of having someone like that in his life. Someone who irked him but he loved them despite their little flaws.

The image of Phil popping up in his mind made his smile disappear.

He almost didn't notice his brother who waved his hand twice in front of Dan's eyes to get his attention.

"Hey Blake" Dan smiled.

"Hey," he said hugging Dan and Dan hugged him back.

"How have you been?" Blake asked.

"'I've been great," he said and Blake grinned.

"Come to my room I wanna show you something," Blake said in a very excited voice

Dan nodded as he followed Blake to his room.

The wall was covered inch by inch with posters of various metal bands. His room was very messy with very little space to move around.

"I have a band" Blake finally announced.

"What?" Dan exclaimed.

"Yes," Blake said. "I am the guitarist and sometimes background vocals"

"Woah"

"We even won a competition"

"And you never told me?" Dan asked.

"I wanted to tell you all this in person," Blake said with a little smile.

"I am so happy for you,"

Blake grinned.

Dan smiled back when he noticed two pictures pinned on the mirror. It was Blake with a girl.

"Who's that?" Dan asked as he stood up to take a closer look.

The girl was hugging Blake in one of the pictures and in the other one Blake was kissing her cheek in the other picture.

"Amelia" he heard Blake's voice.

"Your girlfriend?"

"Yeah" Blake said blushing.

Dan chuckled.

"For how long?"

"Six months"

"Oh that's a lot of time"

Blake nodded.

"She is amazing"

"I bet she is"

Their conversation was interrupted by their dad telling them to get ready to go out for a dinner.

Dinner was a fairly jovial affair and Dan was reminded again how much he missed his family and he mentally made a note to visit much more frequently.

After dinner, they made their way back home and Dan was so tired that he would have slept right on the couch but he forced himself to his old room where his mum was making the bed.

"Hey honey"

"Hey mum"

Dan yawned as he sat on the chair.

"Dan?"

"Mmhm"

"Why do I feel like you are thinking a lot? Is something troubling you?" his mum said.

"What? Nothing" Dan lied.

"You don't have to lie to me," she said.

"I am not"

"As you say," she said as she tucked in the corners. Dan knew she wasn't believing him.

Dan sighed,

"It's just," he said.

"It's what?" his mum asked.

"There is this person whom I like a bit and they don't seem to have the same feelings for me," Dan said,

"Oh, and how do you know that?"

"I just do," he said.

"Well, do you like this person a lot?"

"Yeah I do"

His mum came and sat next to him and took his hand.

"Dan honey all I can say that tell them before it's too late. It won't be easy but you will regret it even more if you don't tell them how you feel. Bottling up your feelings like that is never a good thing"

Dan nodded.

His mum smiled kissing his cheek lightly.

Dan was glad that his mum had asked no invasive questions about this person. And he was glad that she didn't. He wasn't ready to tell her about Phil and that he was a guy. Not that his mum or dad would mind it still did seem like a strange idea to Dan.

"Good night honey and do think about what I said, love you"

"Love you too mum," Dan said as his mum left the room.

Dan stood up from his spot and lied down on the bed thinking about Phil.

Maybe his mum was right, maybe he should talk to Phil.

He then saw the image of Phil kissing the boy and the idea didn't seem that appealing anymore.
