The One With The Distance

Dan never knew that a boy could have such an effect on him but here he was lying on his bed at 2 am looking at pictures of Phil Lester.

It had been days since they even talked to each other.

Dan had tried to maintain some kind of contact by sending him texts but Phil would never reply so Dan stopped trying.

He was always so used to be alone in his life to be aloof and rarely have someone to talk to and Dan never minded about it. He enjoyed his company over anyone else's.

But then he met Phil who wanted to talk to him who forced Dan to come out of his shell and basically threw his life upside down.

Now Phil had left him and Dan was alone.

And he couldn't cope.

He was craving Phil's company. The break was taking the toll on him. He missed Phil a lot and he hated the fact that couldn't see Phil even when he was living in the flat right in front of his.

Dan was in love even when he had never thought he would be. He had never let his guard down like this. Let someone into his life with the exception of Phil and now he wasn't sure if they could ever be together.

It wasn't a breakup Dan had to  remind himself.

But as every day passed Dan lost his hope of getting back together with Phil.

He wasn't even sure if it was all worth it.

Dan was looking a cab to get him home. His car had broken down in the morning along with his straighteners and he had to show up in the office with his curly head. It wasn't a good day.

As he waited he saw Matty approaching him.

Dan groaned. He really didn't want to face this right now. Ever since the awkward almost kiss they had shared in a pub Dan avoided Matty at all costs and it helped because Matty didn't seem like he wanted to talk either.

But now he was fast approaching Dan. Dan hoped he wanted to talk about something related to work.

"Hey," Matty said.

"Hi"

"Dan I just wanted to say I am sorry. I wasn't thinking that day. I really shouldn't have done that"

"It's  fine," Dan said. "It's no big deal."

"Thanks for forgiving me"

Dan smiled.

"Are you waiting for someone?" Matty asked.

"Uh no. I just wanted to get a cab"

"Can I drop you to your house instead?"

"That would be nice of you. Thanks"

"No problem" Matty smiled. "Come on"

Dan followed Matty to his car and got in and told him the address.

"So," Matty said.

"Yeah"

"Is Phil Lester your boyfriend?"

"Huh? How do you know him?" Dan asked surprised.

"Facebook" Matty chuckled. "I found your account. I even sent you a request" 

"Oh"

"You didn't see?"

"No. I don't really use Facebook" Dan said.

"You guys look cute together," Matty said.

"Thanks" Dan replied unenthusiastically.

"Is everything all right? You seem a bit off"

"Yeah," Dan lied. "Everything's fine.

"Is it something to do with Phil?"

"Kinda yeah" 

"Is everything all right between you two?"

"Not really"

"Huh"

"We are on some kind of break. I don't even know" Dan sighed.

"I am so sorry"

"No don't be," Dan said.

"How long have you been together?"

"About 2 months. I  know it isn't long but we were close for a long time. I love him"

"I am sure you do" Matty said. "And don't worry too much about it okay"

"Yeah"

They had reached Dan's building.

"Thanks for the ride"

"No problem"

"Good night. See you tomorrow"

"Night"

With that Matty drove off leaving a smiling Dan. He wasn't really that bad and that stupid move he made on Dan  was just a mistake. Everyone makes mistakes.

He was glad that he talked to someone about Phil. He didn't tell  his parents because he didn't want them to know that his first real relationship had failed.

So talking to Matt made him feel lighter.

Dan  climbed the stairs and entered his flat when  his phone buzzed.

It was a text from Phil.

"Who was the guy with you today?"

With trembling hands Dan typed back.

"Just a colleage"

"All right"

"Good night" Dan typed.

Phil read it but didn't reply.

Dan thew his phone back on the sofa frustrated. He could never understand Phil.
