I waited anxiously in the waiting room. My family and Taevy’s parents were there too, waiting to hear from the doctor about Taevy. We were told that there was a chance that she fainted again because her heart wasn’t pumping enough blood. Just knowing what this horrible condition was doing to her was tearing my heart to pieces. Why wasn’t I the one with the condition? I swear I won’t be able to live without Taevy if she goes. I don’t think I can deal with the pain of losing her.

It seemed liked hours when Doctor Lee, who had treated Taevy last time, approached us. From the look on her face, I knew straight away she was going to tell us something bad. My heart collapsed in my chest thinking that maybe she didn’t make it. But that would be totally insane if she didn’t make it. I mean, she had a pulse. She had to be alive.

I got off my seat and hurried over to her. “How is she? Please tell me that Taevy is okay.”

My family and Taevy’s parents stood behind me. I felt Tristan’s hands on my shoulders.

Doctor Lee looked at us all. “Taevy is fine for the mean time.”

“The mean time?” I said, feeling myself getting angry for some reason. “What do you mean in the mean time?”

“We don’t think Taevy is going to live much longer.” Everyone gasped. “Her heart is failing quickly.”

I felt my world crashing around me. No. Please can someone just tell me that whatever Doctor Lee is saying is not true and that this all a nightmare. I seriously don’t want to lose Taevy.

“What about a donor?” Mr Michael asked. “Is there a donor available?”

Doctor Lee shook her head. “I’m afraid there isn’t, Mr Michael. Unless a heart is found at the last minute, but I highly doubt it that Taevy will be able to get a new heart. At the moment I think it’s best she stays at the hospital for now on.”

I wanted to punch something to release the anger I had inside of me. How can there not be a donor? There had to be one.

“What do you mean there’s no donor?” I asked. “There has to be one.”

“I wish there was, Liam, but there isn’t,” Doctor Lee said.

“Bull crap.”

“Liam,” I heard the warning voice in my mother’s voice, but I ignored her.

“People die every day and you’re telling us that there is no heart for Taevy?!”

Doctor Lee reached her hand out to me, but I took a step backwards, bumping into Tristan behind me. I knew she was going to try and comfort me. I didn’t need to be comfort. I just want Taevy to get better.

“Liam, I know what you must be feeling, but you need to understand that I can’t just give Taevy a heart. There are other people just like her who are probably in surgery right now receiving their new hearts. And there might be some that won’t get a new one. But even if she does get a donor, it doesn’t mean the surgery will go well. Her body could reject it.”

I stared at her knowing that she was right, but I didn’t want to hear it. I didn’t want to know that this was reality and that the only time Taevy will live if this was all a movie. In a movie Taevy would get a heart, but since it wasn’t, Taevy had little chances of getting one.

Without saying anything else, I turned and ran out of the cardiac ward. Tristan ran after me, calling me. I ignored him and kept running. I had to get out of here. Being in this hospital is all too much for me.

I came to an elevator and pushed the button repeatedly. I got frustrated when it didn’t open in a hurry. I could feel tears building up in my eyes and I was trying to hold it in. The doors opened and I waited for a woman with a young boy, who looked to be about seven, step out of the elevator before I entered it. Just as the doors were about to close, Tristan pushed his way in. He didn’t say anything. He just stood there. I stared at the numbers, not sure which floor I should press. It didn’t matter anyway since the elevator was moving up and I didn’t really care where it took me.
