I didn’t want to leave Threado the next day, but we had to get back home because of Mr Michael’s job. But I was glad that in the next few days we were going back to Queensland. I just hope that when we go, everything will be okay and nothing will happen to her.
“What do you want to do today?” I asked Taevy as we got out of the car once we returned home.
“Can we go to the tree?” Taevy said.
“Make sure you unpack your things first, Taevy,” Mrs Michael said.
Taevy promise she will and I told her I will come over as soon as I greeted my family. I greeted Mum and Tristan who were on the couch watching a movie. Natasha wasn’t home. I headed up to my room before heading next door.
Mrs and Mr Michael were in the kitchen when I went next door. Mrs Michael was trying to figure out what to cook for dinner and her husband was saying that they should go out for dinner. I ignored them and headed up the stairs.
I knocked on Taevy’s door. “Taevy?”
She didn’t answer. Maybe she didn’t hear me. I knocked again but still no answer. I opened the door. “Taevy, are you here?”
I found Taevy lying on the floor of her room, lying on her stomach. I tried not to panic or anything. She was probably sleeping but then at the same time I wasn’t sure if she was sleeping. I mean what if it had something to do with her heart? Oh gosh, has it stopped working?
I quickly rushed to her side. “Taevy? Taevy, wake up.”
She didn’t respond. I check for a pulse on her neck. I was relieved to know she still had a pulse. That means she was still alive. Her pulse was slow but she was alive.
I picked her off the floor and hurried down the stairs, calling out to her parents. They came out from the kitchen. Mr Michael quickly grabbed the phone and dialled the ambulance. Mrs Michael told me to put Taevy down on the couch. I did.
“Do you know what happened, Liam?” Mrs Michael asked me.
I shook my head. “No, I found her like this. It’s her heart, isn’t it?”
“Yes, it will be.”
“Will she be alright?”
“I hope so.”
The ambulance soon arrived. I moved aside and watched as the paramedics put a breathing mask on her and checked her pulse. They then loaded her onto the stretcher and wheeled her to the ambulance. Mrs Michael went with her.
It took me a few minutes to figure out what had happen. I didn’t even know why it was happening. I still don’t know how I have never known about her condition.
Mr Michael offered to take me to the hospital. I went with him.
“Why is this happening to Taevy?” I asked, trying not to cry.
“I don’t know, Liam. Since her last surgery in April she has been getting sicker. Normally she is okay, but now her heart is getting weaker and there’s nothing we can do.”
“There has to be something we can do for her.”
“I wish there was something too, Liam. But unfortunately all we can do is wait until she gets a new heart.”
I don’t know why I said the next words. Perhaps it was because I was scared. “What if she never gets a donor?”
Mr Michael slowed to stop at a red light. He wouldn’t look at me and I think there were tears in his eyes. “I don’t know, Liam. I have been trying to figure out for years on how to make Taevy better. There are days when I wonder if she is ever going to get better. No matter how much I want Taevy to live a better life, I know it will never happen.”
