It has been an hour since Taevy was rushed to the hospital. I was waiting in the emergency room, pacing around the room and not so sure what was happening to Taevy. No one has given me any updates on how she was since she collapsed at the beach. I was hoping that nothing bad was going to happen to her. I tried to think of a way to tell her parents that Taevy was in hospital.
I was starting to get impatient. I was tired as well, but sleeping right now was impossible. Every time a doctor walked into the room to call a patient, I would hold my breath and silently pray that they were calling me to say that Taevy was fine and that she could leave. But then my stomach twisted into knots when I found out that they weren’t coming to tell me that my girlfriend was fine.
Eventually I couldn’t take it anymore and I marched over to the reception, asking her if I could see Taevy. The receptionist said she will call someone and then told me to take a seat in the meantime. I just rolled my eyes. I didn’t want to sit and wait for a lousy doctor. I want to go in and see Taevy.
Fifteen minutes past before someone finally called out my name. I leaped up from my seat and walked over to the doctor. He was a tall dark skin man with an Indian background. He had a concern look on his face and I couldn’t help wonder if Taevy was okay. Oh please God, don’t let anything happen to her.
“How’s Taevy?” I asked him.
“She needs to have surgery,” he said.
I stared at him, wondering why Taevy would need surgery. “Surgery? What for?”
“Her heart is failing, Liam.”
I stood there in shock, not knowing what to say. No. This can’t be true. Taevy is fine. “Failing? What do you mean its failing?”
“Taevy has a congenital heart defect. We can give her surgery to make sure everything is okay, but what she really needs is a new heart.”
Congenital heart defect? Since when does Taevy have that? How come I don’t know about it?
This has to be a joke. I don’t believe anything that the doctor is saying. Taevy is perfectly healthy.
A lump formed in my throat. “What happens if she doesn’t get a new heart?”
“Well, I can’t really say. She could survive okay without the heart transplant, but eventually she will need that heart transplant. Right now her heart doesn’t look like it’s going to last for long. I reckon she has at least two months to live before her heart will completely fail on her.”
“F-f-fail?” my voice caught in my throat.
The doctor nodded. “I’m sorry to tell you this, Liam.”
I couldn’t stand. This news was all too much for me. I sat down and buried my face in my hands as I began to cry. No, this can’t be happening. How could someone so perfect and beautiful like Taevy Michael be dying?
I looked up at the doctor, wiping away my tears. “Does Taevy know about this?”
The doctor nodded. “Yes, she does. I inform her with what is happening.”
A million things race through my head, remembering everything Taevy and I have done over the years since we were kids. I don’t understand how everything was just so perfect and now Taevy is dying with a heart condition that I never knew she had. Please tell me that this all just some kind of crazy nightmare.
“Can I see her?” I asked.
The doctor smiled at me. “Sure. Come with me.”
I followed him through the doors and down corridors until we reached a room where Taevy was sharing a ward with another woman that looked like she was about three years older than us. The doctor closed the curtain so we could have our privacy and left us. I stared at Taevy. She looked different. She looked pale a bit. No. She can’t be sick. No, this is just some stupid nightmare. Taevy isn’t sick.
