I awoke to the machines beeping. It was like this long sound and when I glanced up I saw that Taevy’s heart had stopped beeping. I started to freak out. No. Not yet. I’m not ready for this.

I started shaking her, anything for her to open her eyes.

“Taevy, wake up!” I screamed. “Taevy, no you can’t do this to me! Taevy!”

Tears fell down my face hard. A pair of arms appeared around me, pulling me close to them. I heard someone switch the machine turned off.

“She is gone, Liam,” Mr Michael said.

“No, she isn’t gone,” I cried. “We have to bring her back. Take my heart and give it to her.”

“She is gone, Liam. There’s nothing we can do.”

“Bull crap.” I pushed Mr Michael away from me. “There is something we can do. She can have my heart.”

“It’s too late, Liam.”

“It’s not too late!”

I ran out of the room. I heard Mr Michael chasing after me and calling out my name. I ignored him. I ran and found stairs near the lift. I climbed up them until I came to the roof. I hurried over to the edge and stood there, staring down at the ground below. Right underneath me was solid concrete ground. Perfect.

I closed my eyes for a second, imagining what it would be like if I jumped. Hopefully if I do this, they will rush me quickly to the ER and give my heart to Taevy. They have to. She still has a chance to live if they hurried up.

I was just about to jump when someone’s arms appeared around my waist, pulling me away from the edge.

“Liam, don’t do it,” Mr Michael said.

“Let me go!” I screamed. “I have to do this for Taevy!” I freed myself from Taevy’s dad and just stared at him. Why was he stopping me? Didn’t he want me to save his daughter?

“Liam, I understand how you feel. I feel the same way. I wish there was a way to stop this from happening, but there isn’t. It’s too late, Liam. You can’t save Taevy.”

“Yes, I can. I will give up my life just for her.”

“I know. But you can’t.”

“Oh yeah? Watch me. I will.”

I went to try and jump again, but Mr Michael stopped me. I pushed him off me and then ran down the stairs. I have to get out of here. I can’t be here.

I ran down the stair case. I didn’t stop. I kept running through the corridors and out on the street. My chest began to ache and it felt like it might explode any minute. I didn’t care if it exploded. I didn’t care if I dropped dead right on the side walk. At least then I would be with Taevy.

I ran all the way to the park without stopping. I got to our tree and climbed up. I ran my hand over the trunk where Taevy and I had carved our names into the bark near the branch we always sat on. I rested my head on the trunk and cried.

I don’t know how long I was there for, but I stayed there for hours. I didn’t want to leave the tree. Memories of Taevy and me in this tree flooded my mind. It was soon getting dark and I just stayed there. It was cool and I didn’t have a jumper since it was a warm day. I shivered briefly.

I wish you were here, Taevy. I need you.

“Liam.”

I swear I thought I knew Taevy’s voice that very moment. I was about to call out her name when I realise that it was her. It was Tristan. I glanced down and saw him standing at the bottom of the tree.
