A doctor pulled her from the corridor and led Allison into a small waiting room. He sat her down and handed over a glass of water. She tried to speak but when her mouth opened, nothing came out.

"Miss, I need you to stay here okay, you can't be in her room. Not while the doctors are in there. Let me find out what is happening. I'm sure they're doing everything they can. Is there any other family? I think you should give them a call."

Then she remembered Alex, Holly's brother.

"She has a brother, his name is Alex. I don't have his number though." she sobbed.

"I'll check her records, i'm sure his number will have been left with her nurse."

He left the room and Allison was all alone again. The silence was deafening. She wanted to go back to her room but she knew she would only get pushed away. Instead, she paced back and forth for what felt like hours. It was 5:45pm. Only a couple of minutes had passed by. Allison sat down in the chair and tried reading the magazines on the table. But she couldn't even bring herself to open the front cover.

She heard the door open and lifted her head. It was the doctor that had been looking after Holly. He had a sombre look on his face and she felt her heart race in her chest. She begged silently that he hadn't brought her bad news.

He shook his head and laughed lightly. "It seems like she's a fighter. We didn't think it was possible, it really shouldn't be possible. But she's stable, and it appears...that she might even be beginning to wake up. It seems that she must've tried to wake up by her own and her body got a little confused. We were worried that we may have lost her, but I can assure you that she's the most stable she's been since she got here. It's a miracle."

Her heart began beating 100 times faster and her hands were soaked in sweat. She was awake?

"You mean..she's actually going to wake up?" Allison stood up from my chair.

"It appears so. How it happened, well...we don't really know. One minute she was flat lining, now she's waking up. The best explanation we can give is the one I just told you. However, when that happens, it often ends tragically. She's a strong girl. A very strong girl."

Allison smiled as tears spilled down her face. "Can I see her?"

"You sure can. She's probably going to be a bit disorientated though so take your time and go slowly. If she does start to talk, it's likely that she may be confused and distressed. If this happens, don't hesitate to come out and get a doctor. She may also drift in and out of sleep for a while but I can assure you that this is totally normal."

The nurse walked with her until both of them were outside Hollys room, then she left for the nurses station. Allison placed her hand over the door handle for a few seconds while she prepared herself.
When she got into the room, she went back over to her bedside and sat down in the same chair she'd been in earlier. She held onto her hand, and Holly squeezed her hand lightly as Allison spoke to her.

"Hey. You gave us a fright there, you had me worried."

Tears rolled down her cheeks as she spoke. Not 20 minutes ago, she was sat in a room not knowing whether or not she would pull through, and now she was sat by her side waiting for her to wake up.

Hollys arm flinched once more and her eyelids flickered. When she was finally able to open them, she fluttered them a few times, probably because she was having a hard time adjusting to the light. At first she stared straight ahead, then her head turned slightly and her eyes met with Allison's. God she had missed seeing those eyes of hers. She didn't do anything else, only stared. Allison smiled at her and rubbed the back of her hand with her thumb as she had done earlier. Then, her eyes began wandering around the room and it was clear that she had no idea where she was.
