Tadashi survived the fire, but he's barely hanging on in a comatose state

---

Beep. Beep. Beep.

The sound of the heart monitor had become the only thing giving you hope over the last couple weeks. You never imagined things would end up like this. Visiting the hospital everyday only to see your boyfriend, Tadashi in a coma. Talking to him in hopes he'd wake up, but him not being able to respond. Only being able to watch his steady, yet slow breaths as the heart monitor went off. His only way of survival being because of life support. He didn't deserve this. You wished everyday to take his miserable place.

You and Hiro both tried to stop him from running in the fire that night, but he wouldn't give up on saving Callaghan. After the expo hall exploded, you screamed and pleaded for Tadashi to come back out. You knew there wasn't much of a chance on him surviving, but you didn't want to assume the worst.

You'll never forget the moment the fire department found him. He was on a gurney, but covered up and just barely hanging onto his life. No one was allowed to ride in the ambulance with him. He's okay. He'll make it, I know he will, you thought to yourself the whole ride to the hospital.

Since being admitted into the hospital, he was put on life support and properly bandaged up. His bandages covered the majority of his body. You knew the burns that were under them couldn't be pretty, but you didn't care. He was still Tadashi and you still loved him no matter what.

For the past two weeks, you visited him everyday twice a day. The doctors told you that talking to him might help him wake up, but it hasn't worked yet. Of course, that hasn't stopped you from trying. You would talk about your day or how his family and friends are doing. But when you desperately wanted him to be awake, you would tell him how much he means to you. You were terrified to lose him for good; the mere thought of him ever having to be taken off of life support brought tears to your eyes.

You tried to think positive, but sometimes it felt hopeless. He hasn't budged since he got here. With every passing day that's gone by, it's felt like there's less and less of a chance that he'll wake up. But if there's one thing Tadashi has taught you, it's that you should never give up. He always encouraged you to keep going no matter how hard something was. No matter how slim of a possibility it is for him to live, you weren't ready to give up on him.

Hiro and Cass had just left to go get lunch in the hospital's cafeteria. They offered you to join them, but you rather opted to stay with Tadashi. Truth be told you haven't eaten much lately. You constantly thought about Tadashi and the fear of him not pulling through this often made you sick to your stomach. You ate when you could, and when you did it wasn't much.

You yawned; sleep hasn't been easy for you to get either. Stretching, you watched as Tadashi took another slow breath in. It broke your heart to see him so vulnerable. He has no idea how close he is to dying. Standing up from your chair, you walk over to his still body, placing a hand on top of his own. His body temperature is so cold in comparison to yours.

You take a moment to take in all the features of his that aren't bandaged. His eyes are closed, but you know his warm, beautiful brown eyes are under those lids. His nose is mostly covered, but he has tubes in the nostrils to help his breathing. His mouth is closed, but his lips are still plump. You missed his sweet, comforting kisses. The top of his head was full of bandages, but you could still see strands of his thick, raven hair sticking out in some places. You often wondered how much hair he would still have left. Whether it be half or barely any, you didn't care. In your eyes, he was still as perfect as he was before the accident.

"Hiro and your Aunt Cass are at lunch," you started to tell him. Those were the first words you had spoken since they left. "They'll be back soon. I'm just not up for lunch today. The hospital food isn't all that great anyway." You forced out a quiet laugh. "I think Honey Lemon said her and the others are stopping by later in the afternoon today. They're all really worried about you too. You're all we ever talk about anymore. We all just want you to be okay, sweetie."

Bending over, you placed a soft kiss on top of his bandaged forehead. The hand you had on top of his was now cradling his jaw line. Your thumb carefully stroked his cheek which felt slightly rigid under the bandage. "I miss you," you told him, tears starting to prickle in your eyes. "We all miss you so much. Being at school isn't the same without you. Your house is so quiet too. Nothing feels the same without you. I'm so scared that you're not gonna make it. The doctors have told Aunt Cass they can't keep you on life support forever. I don't want that day to come for you. P-please...don't leave me."

A fresh set of tears had fallen down your face, staining your skin. Your vision became blurry as your crying turned into sobs. Your legs shook uncontrollably, but you refused to sit back down. It was such a selfish thing to beg of someone that wasn't conscious, but you didn't know what else to say. "I-I understand that if it's your time to go, b-but...I'm sorry, Tadashi. I-I should have tried harder to stop you from running in the building that night. I'm the worst girlfriend ever, I-I'm sorry! I...I love you so much."

You looked back at his closed eyes, noticing something that hasn't happened the whole time he's been here. His eyelids began to twitch as if they were starting to open. A quiet gasp escaped from you as you examined the rest of his body. He remained still, but his eyelids continued to move. "Tadashi?" you breathed out.

Then, you heard a faint, strained mumble. His next breath seemed slightly hitched, yet he still didn't budge. Taking a step back, your hands gripped onto the side of his hospital bed. Every small movement he made had your heart pounding. Was this the moment you had been waiting for?

Finally, his eyes became half open. It's the most he's moved in two weeks and you almost couldn't contain how excited you were becoming. Again, tears formed in your eyes, but they were joyful this time around. For the first time in what felt like an eternity, you felt yourself smile.

His eyes finally opened widely, but he was still stiff as a board. A minute went by before his eyes glanced over to you.

You took in the rich, chocolate shade of his eyes. Yet, the way he was staring at you filled you with concern. Was he confused? Does he remember who you are?

His lips began to quiver and he continued to look at you. "(Y-Y/N)?" He mumbled.

You gasped louder this time. Another fresh set of tears fell, but you didn't notice. "Tadashi?" Your voice shook as you spoke. You couldn't believe what was happening, but you were ecstatic that he was responsive. "Oh my gosh, Tadashi. You're okay!" You wanted to hug him so bad, but you were afraid you'd irritate his burns.

"Wha–what happened? Where am I?"

You placed your hand on top of his again in a comforting manner. "Sweetheart, you...you almost died on us. Remember what happened at our school? There was fire and you went in to go save Professor Callaghan. The building exploded and...you've been in a coma ever since."

You couldn't tell what Tadashi's exact expression was, but you knew he had to be extremely confused and shocked by the news. "I...that happened?"

"Yes. Yes, it was so terrifying! Everyone's been visiting you everyday. You haven't moved in two weeks, I-I thought you were going to die. I'm so glad you woke up!"

"I'm glad too...where's Hiro and Aunt Cass?"

"At lunch. Oh, they're going to be so happy to see you! Tadashi, I'm so sorry this happened to you. It's all my fault. I should have stopped you, but I didn't try hard enough and now you have burns everywhere."

"No...no it's not your fault. I missed you, (Y/N)."

"I missed you too. I missed you so much! I promise I'll be with you every step of the way for your recovery. Thank you for not leaving me and the others."

"Leave you?" He questioned. "I could never leave you, I love you too much!"

"I love you so much!" For the first time since the showcase, you shared a long, loving, but gentle kiss with Tadashi. The journey from this moment on wasn't going to be easy, but you were ready for whatever came next.

AAAAAAAAAA I LOVE THIS. The second I read the prompt, my mind immediately went to "ANGST! TADASHI IN A COMA DO IT!" This was another writing prompt where I had to use the sentence  "I could never leave you, I love you too much!" And I think this was really good! Hope you enjoyed it! :D
