Chapter 2

When school was out I ran toward the swings. I was hoping that Alice would keep her promise. I looked around the playground, but I didn't see Alice. I sighed, and I started to swing, trying to get higher and higher. Even though on the outside I looked bored, on the inside I was really sad that Alice didn't show up.

I stopped trying to swing and let my feet drag against the ground.

"Circe!" Alice called. I looked up and I saw Alice was running toward me. "Sorry to keep you waiting, but I had to ask my mom if I could play with you today and if you could come over Friday. She said yes!" Alice excitedly told me.

     "Okay," I replied.

"You don't talk much, do you?" Alice giggled.

"Well, I mean, I guess." I replied to her, attempting to be a bit louder.

Alice giggled, "I do like your hair though, that aqua blue is my favorite color!"

     "Really?" I said happily.

"Of course. Let's go on the monkey bars and race!" she grabbed my hand and pulled me to the monkey bars. "Lets have a race!"

I went over to the other monkey bars and got ready. "Ready?" I asked.

"Go!" she yelled. I quickly raced to the other side, beating Alice.

     "Good race!" I shouted.

"Wow! Your like, super fast!" Alice smiled.

"Alice, is this your friend?" A women came up to her who I assumed was her mother.

"Yes! Isn't her hair pretty?" she told the women.

"It certainly is interesting," the women said, "Well, you can call me Mrs. Hughes."

"Okay, my name is Circe" I shyly replied.

"Is that your natural hair dear?" Mrs. Hughes pleasantly asked.

"Um, yeah of course it is" I said unsurely.

"Would your parents let you come over after school Friday? May I talk to them?" she questioned.

"Yes they would, and um, they don't talk."

"Oh, can I meet them then? Tomorrow?"

"They are out of town," I quickly fabricated.

"You’re alone?" she said surprised. I just nodded, I didn’t want my new friend to think I was homeless, well know I am homeless.

"Mom! I'm hungry." Alice started to complain.

"Well, I will see you later dear!" Mrs. Hughes said, taking Alice and waving good-bye.

I let out a sigh of relief. She won't know. It was Wednesday, and I was going over Friday. I was extremely excited for Friday. I would be in a real home for the first time!

"Hey freak!" Tom yelled. I looked over to see Tom and his gang of tormentors. I winced. "I see you got a new friend, does she know you’re poor and homeless?" I didn't respond.

"I guess not." Garrett pointed out, Garrett along with Peter, Gage, and Liam were in Tom's little posse.

"We should tell her." Gage suggested. Tom and his posse agreed.

"Don't you dare tell her!" I yelled at them.

"Trying to scare us?" Tom smirked. I glared at them.

"Hey, I have an even better idea!" Liam said.

"Say it Liam, my dad is going to pick me up soon!" Peter snapped.

"Well my big brother told me about the 30 Second Game. It’s where we beat someone up for thirty seconds showing no mercy. We could do that to Alice."

My eyes widened. As you can see these people you would refer to as trailer trash, and they are involved in gang activity, and Liam’s brother was a gang leader for some local gang. So he would know just about everything there is to know about hurting and they didn't care either.

"Leave her alone!" I hissed at them.

"Better watch out," they laughed as they walked away. There is no way they will hurt Alice.
