Phil's POV:
We pulled up to the orphanage. It looked nice. Clean. We walked in where we were greeted by Mrs.Carrie.
"Hello! It's so great to meet you!" She shakes our hands. We have talked over the phone a couple of times.
"So what range of age are you looking for in boys?"
"Well..." Dan starts. "We wanted a young energetic boy. But we were also thinking of toddlers."
"Amazing. Well I can take you to the nursery right now!"
"That would be great!" I smile.
She smiles back and leads us to the nursery. Cute little baby boys. Some of them can walk, some crawling, some already talking, and some babies who have been born almost a week ago.
"Feel free to play with them. I'll be back, I need to answer a few calls." She smiles and leaves.
I, obviously, immediately start playing with the babies. After about 20 minutes, Dan sits in one of the rocking chairs and let's out a sigh.
"You okay Dan?" I ask as one toddler crawls to me, giggling.
"I don't think a baby is for us."
"Why not?"
"Phil! We can barely take care of Dil! And he's an adult. AND A COMPUTER GAME!"
I look down. "True..."
"Alright! I'm back!" Mrs.Carrie opens the door with a huge smile on her face. "Have we decided?"
I stand up and put the baby down to go play with the others. "I think we want someone a little older."
"That's completely okay! Feel free to walk around and meet the kids!"
"Phil, want to split up?" Dan asks.
"I'll call you if I find someone."
"So will I." He smiles and kisses me on my head.
I walked around for 10 minutes. Until I heard giggling from one of the rooms.
"RWAR!!" It sounded like a 8 year old playing with someone.
I looked in the crack of the door, there sat a little boy, alone, playing.
"Fear me!!!" He says while throwing a stuffed dinosaur onto a pile of hot wheels.
I walk in quietly so he doesn't notice me.
"Hello?" I ask.
He turns around and our blue eyes meet. He looks like me when I was younger.
I kneel to his level. "Hi, I'm Phil. What's your name?"
He just stares and points at a chalk board hanging from the bed frame. It says, Kyle.
"Kyle, that's a cute name." I smile. "How old are you?"
He stays silent and holds up 6 fingers.
"Phil!" Dan shouts as he runs into the room. "God this orphanage has terrible service. I've been trying to call you!"
"Did you find someone?"
"Nope! All the kids are too busy playing or something."
I smile. "This is Kyle." I gesture to him.
"Hm?" He turns and kneels to the boy. "Hello. I'm Dan." He smiles.
Soon Mrs.Carrie comes in. "Kyle! You haven't done your chores!"
Dan's POV:
"Kyle! You haven't done your chores!" That's exactly what the Dean said to Molly before I adopted her. Is this the universe telling me that we've found our kid?
"Oh, I see you have found Kyle..."
"Uh..yeah...he's a very quiet boy." Phil says.
"Can I talk to the two of you for a minute? Privately?"
Both Phil and I nodded and left the room.
"Listen. I really don't think Kyle is the kid for you two."
"Why not?" Phil asks.
"It's not that I don't want him to be adopted, just, a lot of parents don't want him after I tell them his medical record. I guess you could say he is one of the rejects."
"Reject?"
"Yes, like older kids, everyone wants the babies and the 5 year olds. No one wants the teenager who is moving out in 2 years."
"Right...but what makes that adorable kid a reject?" Phil asks.
"Kyle is severely autistic, sensory issues and OCD. It's very hard to raise a kid that's not even yours, but it's harder when they don't even understand anything. I'm really looking out for him. A lot of the times, he gets taken home, the parents think they can raise him, they can't, and they drop him off again. I don't want him going through that again."
"I think we can do this." I smile.
"That's what they all say! I'm not trying to get you to pick a different kid, I just want to make sure you really want him!"
"We do." I say as I look at Phil who gave a look that he does too.
"Alright. I do recommend therapy too later on!" She smiles and goes to Kyle.
"Kyle." She kneels to him. "How would you like to go home with these nice men?"
He looks at us and shakes his head no.
"Why not?" She asks.
"I come back! Always!" He whines.
"Sweetie. I promise. That won't happen!"
"Promise?"
"Promise!"
He smiles and grabs his dinosaur and looks at me, smiling. Phil helps him with his bags and I sign the papers.
We get into the car and drive home. Once we reached the flat we went to show Kyle his new room. We turned my old room into his. We painted the walls blue, got a smaller bed, keeping the dresser, and desk in there.
Phil kneels to Kyle. "Do you like it?"
He nods...is this really going to work out?
