Jack

"Jack!" I giggled. We rolled around the stone floor, rough housing. I've always been a tomboy, girls are too dramatic. At 12 years old, he's literally been my best friend. Ever since the day he lost his parents in an armed robbery, I promised that I'd be there for him. He started cutting a lot before that, and I couldn't blame him. I guess Jack was jealous of me because I still had my parents, and an annoying little brother. Although, I did treat him as part of the family, so he got used to it.

"Hikaru, stop pulling on my hair!" Jack shouted.

"Then you stop pulling on mine!" I shouted back.

We both let go at the same time and breathed hard, grinning like idiots.

"That was fun." I murmured.

"Mm."

"Wanna head back now? The sun's already setting down."

We sat up, looking through the giant hole that was our sky.

"Don't you think it's pretty?" He asked.

"Yeah... I wonder what mom's cooking for dinner."

"Mm. I bet my grandparents helped too."

Our families lived together to make a living, and let's just say we're living fine. It's not the best, but it's better than what others have. I sighed.

"Something wrong?" Jack looked at me with his big hazel eyes.

"Nahh, just tired is all."

"All right."

We walked in comfortable silence, sweaty. I opened the door and said, "Ladies first."

"Oh, shut up."

I smirked.

He walked in and I followed. Jack froze. I bumped into him.

"Hey! Move it, jeez, are you even hungry? This is the only big meal we e-",

I moved next to him. My brain only took small photos. A plate broken. Someone was unconscious.

"Grandma!" He screamed, his beautiful hazel eyes tarnished by tears.

Jack laid a bouquet of slowly wilting flowers on top of what is his grandma's pile of dirt. Dressed in the fanciest clothes we had, let's just say they aren't very fancy, we stood vigil. I cried silently, but Jack's face was pale. He looked very ill, seeming as if he'd collapse at any moment. His eyes were red and dry of tears, lips cracked and slightly parted. God, why'd she have to die? My little brother had no idea what was happening, and he kept tugging on my mother's dress asking, "Where's grandma? Why is she under the dirt? Why isn't she here right now?"

All the questions I didn't want to answer. Nobody did.

At about midnight we headed back.

Jack and I shared a room and one bathroom. We had a bunk bed we got as an inheritance from my grandparents who died before I was born. Jack had the top, I had the bottom. The piano I loved playing, self-taught, was sitting in the corner. Also an inheritance.

"I'll... go wash myself first. Is that okay?"

He said nothing and I headed in. Undressing myself, I took out a rag that was settled on the bottom of a pail, soaked with cold water. I didn't feel it. It's possible it's because I'm already cold. I heard movement outside, probably Jack getting into bed. I guess I'll have to talk to him in the morning.

I dried off with a towel, putting on my sleeping gown, and walked out rubbing my hair. "Hey, you have to at least take a shower or-" I looked up.

Jack wasn't in bed. Rather, hanging from a rope. He was trying to kill himself again. I stayed calm. He used the ropes that attached the ladder to the top and bottom bunk. I knew it wasn't stable, but I stood on it anyway. I used my light weight to my advantage and quickly climbed to his height. Purple bruises started showing around his neck, and his face was completely pale. I quickly untied him, holding him in my arms. The weight got me off balance and the ladder, Jack, and I came crashing down.

I grunted, landing on my back. He was on top of me, but I felt his fingers twitching, color returning to his face. The ladder was on top of us and he slowly sat up. The ladder fell next to us. Jack put his right hand to his face. He started crying. "Are you... okay?" I asked him, back aching. I sat up. We were facing each other, "I-I-I'm s-sorry.." Jack croaked. Tears streamed down his face and I pulled him close. I put his face under my neck and I stroked his hair softly. "Jack... It's okay. Don't worry. I'm here for you, just like I promised." He wrapped his hands around my back and started to sob into my nightgown all over again. Just like last time.
