After everyone refilled their gas tanks, we made our way outside. I mostly kept silent, following behind Levi who was leading us. My eyes were dull, and I suddenly felt tired. It was as if my emotions had been swept away. Well, apparently everything has.
"Eren!" I heard Mikasa cry. He emerged from the nape of a Titan, and I felt slightly confused. Why was Eren inside the nape of a Titan?
She jumped from the roof, grappling onto the evaporating decaying Titan. The group stopped. Mikasa listened for a heartbeat, looking desperate. He's dead. There's no hope. Wait... then why does she look relieved? I don't understand.
"Is he alive?" Armin asked cautiously. She nodded, struggling to pull him out. Smoke came from the body, and finally they removed him from the Titan. Mikasa flew onto a roof with Eren on her back. She nodded at Levi and the group started off once again.
"But that's... not fair.." I unconsciously whispered to myself.
If Eren got to live, then why didn't Jack? Why didn't Ruthie? What about everyone that's disappeared from my life, how come they didn't get to survive? Everyone left me. I'm all alone. Why was I allowed to live? I just... don't understand.
The group continued on, avoiding more Titans, jumping off roofs, whatever it took to reach the wall. Whenever we did, some people started to sob, a few kissed the stone, and others just collapsed. I was the only one standing and showing no emotion. Levi was over with Mikasa and Armin, who were fussing over Eren. I felt cold. My lips were cracked, and I felt this sense of emptiness. I looked down at the ruined city of Trost. The wind blew at me from the front, brushing all of my tangled, wet hair out of my face. I was standing in the exact position when the battle first started, except my friends were still alive. I had planned to say, "Guys, we made it! I told you we'd get through our first battle. Look at us now, we're practically veterans." They would smile as we looked down at the maze of terror. I took out the two symbols in my breast pocket. Gazing at them in the palm of my callused hand, I couldn't distinguish whose was whose. I held them tightly.
"Indeed. Look at us now." My voice was hoarse, my mouth was dry, and so were my lips. I was burning up. And for the second time today, I fainted.
>>Levi's POV<<
I heard something collapse. Turning around, I saw Hikaru on the stone. She looked highly uncomfortable, and her breathing was uneven.
A blonde girl bent down, putting her hand on Hikaru's forehead, "Captain, she's burning up."
Sweat drenched her everything, and I could see slightly through her shirt. Her friend's remnants were tightly clutched in her hand.
"I can take her to the infirmary..."
"No." I interrupted. "I'll take her."
Getting up and away from Eren, I walked over to her. Lifting Hikaru's body up was relatively easy. Taking the symbols out of her hand and into her pocket, I carried her bridal-style to the infirmary. Hikaru's temperature was taken, and the nurse diagnosed her with a high fever. She gave her medicine and left. I pulled up a chair, sitting alone in the room with her. The other beds were unoccupied, but it seemed as if they were still busy. I slid my hand under her bangs, feeling the warmth of her forehead.
I removed my hand. "You're burning up." I muttered. "Tch, it's your fault for overworking."
My gaze wandered back to her pained face. It was as if she was having a nightmare, one she'll never wake up from. I wanted to wake her, but I refrained myself from doing so.
Taking her face into my hand, I brushed over her cracked lips with my thumb, "You're mine."
