Reclaiming Trost, Pt. 1

"And that's the plan." Armin said.

"So basically we're putting all of our faith on Eren." Levi muttered.

"Yup." We were on top of the wall, and I couldn't bring myself to look at Levi. I was still embarrassed about what happened about an hour ago, although it was an accident. He, too, couldn't look me in the eye.

Rico, Levi, and I all sighed at the same time. Armin had this I-am-sorry-and-I-know-I'm-a-disappointment look on his face. Commander Pixis was drinking alcohol, and Eren was lost in deep thought.

"We will now commence the retake of Trost!" Commander Pixis shouted. He was greeted with roars of indignation. Rico picked up the briefcase, and we followed Levi. She ran with Eren, talking to him.

I was able to catch some of their conversation, "They're not pawns. They're people. Each and every one of them has a dream..."

 Mikasa ran side-by-side with Levi, and so did I. Soon, we reached the destination.

"Here's your stop. Make it count." Levi said briefly.

I watched Eren jump from the roof with confidence, roughly biting the side of his hand. Immediately, he turned into a fifteen meter class Titan with a deafening roar. Rico closed her left ear with her hand, firing a green flare.

"What is he doing?" I growled. Eren was just standing in front of the boulder. He slowly turned around, bellowed, and smashed his fist right next to where Mikasa was standing. She was flung into a wall, a shard piercing her cheek.

"Ackerman, look out!" Ian shouted. Eren winded up another punch. Mikasa skillfully dodged it, flying up to his face.

"Mikasa, that's dangerous! He's lost!" I screamed.

"Eren, I know you're in there somewhere! I know you recognize me! That's right, come on! Snap the hell out of it! We've got a breach to seal up!" She cried out. Rico fired a red flare. "Eren, listen to me, you're human. "

"Watch out!" I shouted. She jumped off just as Eren punched himself in the face. He fell down, his back resting against the boulder.

"What the hell?... You're telling me that kid was a regular Titan all along?!" Someone behind me hissed.

"Eren!" Mikasa said desperately.

"Captain! There's two Titans bearing down at us from the front! A ten meter and a six meter!"

"Heads up, there's a twelve meter closing up on us from the rear!"

"Levi, that's it, please. Just look at him. We need to get out of here, the plan's a bust."

"Agreed. Full withdrawal." Rico said sternly. "We have to leave him as he is."

Mikasa gave them a terrifying glare.

"No." I said, my eyes fixed on Eren. "We can't leave him. He's our only hope. Do you know anyone else that can Titan shift? I thought so. What about the comrades dying right now, the ones with dreams and families?" I looked at Rico who's eyes widened. "Did they die for nothing?"

They stared at me, and Mikasa looked like she finally found a friend.

One of them turned away, saying, "Levi, snap out of it, what are you waiting for?! Give the order! Hey, it's not like this is your fault. Come on! Look, this plan was doomed from the start! We all get that. Was it worth the shot? Sure, whatever! We did the best with what we had. But all we've got left is goin' back over the wall."

Levi stared at the roof. Mikasa rushed forward at the person, and he blocked her with his arm. "Stop! Easy. Now's not the time. Team Rico, take out the twelve meter approaching from behind. Team Mitabi and I will handle the two front runners."

"Are you nuts?!" Rico stepped forward with shocked anger.

"Incase you've forgotten, I'm the one in charge! Now do as you're ordered, soldier. Hikaru's right. We are not leaving Jaeger defenseless, period." He shouted. "Change of plans. Our job is to keep the others off him until he can be recovered. Whether we like it or not, he's still our last best chance. We're not about to abandon him. We're expendable, he isn't. He can't just be replaced."

"Please, don't talk to me about our 'last best chance'. He's a failure countless soldiers died because of. Just look at him Levi, are you saying you want more of us to die because of that?!" Rico countered.

"That's right. Down to the last man. If that's what it takes, so be it." Levi stared at Rico with ice cold eyes.

"Levi, you can't be serious."

"What other hope against the Titans do we have? You know something I don't? This is it. This is all we've got and you damn well know it. I am making a judgement call here. And if you have a better plan, speak up. How else are we gonna ever get up from under their feet? I'm all ears here."

"If you're asking me how we'll defeat the Titans, obviously I have no idea."

"See, that's why we can't afford to be at a retreat. Not just yet. We may not know what else is in there, but there's hope. And as long as that's the case, we're going to fight 'till the bitter end. Look at us, always scraping by. Always on the run. Don't you want it to be over? Don't you wanna make a stand? Well this is how it's done." Mikasa and I gazed at Levi with awe. Mitabi was scared shitless, and Rico grinded her teeth.

"This is just. This is madness." She walked away.

"Hey."

"I think you're right. If we're to stand, this is the only way. Just this once. Let's fight a fight that's not just a battle of attrition. Let the bastards taste humanity's wrath. Right. My team will address the twelve meter Titan coming from the rear." Rico walked away, her gear rattling.

Mitabi walked the opposite way. "Well, we've got the two in-fronter, don't we?"

"Right."

"Thank you, Captain. That was brave." Mikasa stood beside him. "No, it wasn't. There's no thanks needed. In fact, the matter is that I was petrified of the mess you were about to get into." He took out his sword, "But you're free now. So do your thing. Be good use of that inborn skill."

"Sir."

"Go save the man you love."

Mikasa looked down, blushing. "It's not like that." Levi ran off, and I followed.
