Brooklyn’s POV
So mystery boy’s name is Luke. I try to push his gorgeous smile out of my mind as I walk back to the house. He is from Australia; I’m from New York. It would never work anyways.
“Hey sweetie, I made sandwiches for lunch!” my mom says as soon as I walk in the door. I grab a ham sandwich off the plate and look in the pantry for more food. “I went grocery shopping while you were at the beach. I tried to get food were used to but I got a few cultural things.” I examine the jar of vegemite on the counter and wrinkle my nose. I grab a can of pop and take my lunch to the living room where Mae is flipping through channels. She finally lands on the movie The Hangover. My gut twists and I feel sick. That was Gunnar’s favorite movie. I quickly stand up and run out of the room leaving my food on the table, not even hungry anymore. I sit in my room staring blankly at the white walls.
“Brooklyn, sweetie? Can I come in?” My mom softly knocks on the door. I don’t respond still in a trance. Immediately after he died I couldn’t function. I stayed in my room for days, hardly eating. Anything that reminds me of him is a trigger. I completely shut down. When I finally went back to school I was labeled as the freak. At my silence my mom lets herself in. I feel her arm drape around my shoulders. “Hun, you can’t shut down like this when something reminds you of him.” Still I say nothing. “I think we need to find you some professional help.”
“What so they can confirm that I’m a freak?” I bite back.
“No so you can talk to someone and get back to some sort of normalcy. I know it’s been hard, it has for all of us. But Gunnar would want you to keep going. What was it that he always told you?”
“Some days you have to create your own sunshine,” I recite. Gunnar always told me that when I was feeling down. “I guess he just couldn’t create enough of his own.” That’s when I break down sobbing. We both hold on to the other and let it out.
I guess I fell asleep because I wake up with a blanket draped over me and my mom gone. My phone says it’s 2am. Once again I find myself quietly heading down to the beach. Loud music floats down the beach from Luke’s house. There is a bunch of people on the beach surrounding a bon fire. I resume my usual position in the sand, clearing my head.
“Hey Brooklyn from Brooklyn!” Luke’s deep voice startles me. “Wanna come party?” he offers.
“Not really in the party mood, thanks.” I say coolly.
“Alright just thought I’d offer. He defends himself and to my dismay he sits down next to me. “What’s got you all Ms. Grumpy gills?” Luke prods. I can tell he’s been drinking a bit as he seems quite bubbly.
“If I told you it’d kill your buzz.” After that he stays silent. “Thanks for sitting with me.” I tell him after about fifteen minutes of silence. It was nice to just have another body there so I didn’t feel quite so alone.
“Anytime.” He responds and stands to his feet before offering me a hand up. I gratefully take it and try to ignore the electric currents running up my arm from his touch. I wonder if he felt it too.
“Don’t party too hard,” I say sarcastically.
“Can’t make any promises!” I see his signature big smile in the dim moonlight. “See you around Brooklyn from Brooklyn!”
Luke’s POV
After leaving Brooklyn her words haunt me ‘if I told you It’d kill your buzz.’ What is bothering her? What if it has something to do with why she came here? I sigh and grab another cup from the keg to silence to montage of questions in my brain. “Lukey!” I just barely hear over the music. Turning to the right I find Jazmin coming towards me. Fuck.
“Hey,” I politely say.
“Dance with me?” She asks trying to look seductive, biting her lip.
“Uh no thanks. I don’t dance.”
“Oh c’mon! It’ll be fun I promise!” Out of the corner of my eye I see Ashton leaning against a wall laughing at my situation.
“Sorry. But here I know Ashton will dance with you!” I lead her over to him giving him no option. I slip away upstairs so she won’t find me again.
“What the fuck, man!? You stuck Jazmin on me? I had to fake puke to get out of that!” Ashton rounds on me the second I walk downstairs. I chuckle.
“Sorry mate. Next time it won’t be as funny!” Ash pouts and goes back to his scrambled eggs. “So who is that girl?”
“What girl?” I play stupid.
“C’mon Luke. The girl you left the party for a few doors down.”
“Oh right. Um well her name is Brooklyn. She’s from New York. That’s as much as I got out of her. She’s very closed off.
“Nice one. She’s hot. You like her?”
“A lot actually. I’ve only talked to her twice but there is just something about her, you know?” It really sounds crazy but I can’t stop thinking about her.
“Yea. That’s how it was when I met Harley.” Michael chimes in. Harley is Michael’s girlfriend of six months. She’s really cool and is pretty close with us guys.
“What do I do?”
“Just keep talking to her. If she has some sort of shit and knows your there for her, eventually she’ll let you in.”
“She’s only here for the summer!” That realization scares me. I can’t let her get away.
So it's still getting going but i promise it'll speed up and the chapters are getting longer as well!! :) Please vote, and comment if you like this! xo -Rachel
