Brooklyn’s POV
My palms were sweaty and my hands shake all the way to the therapist’s office. “Mom, do I really have to? I mean I can totally handle myself!” I argued. She raised an eyebrow at me and reached a hand out for the radio dial. “NO!” I screamed a second before she clicked the radio on. “Ok, fine.” I huff as we pull into the parking lot. Inside a gigantic lobby my mom told an uptight looking lady my name. “Ok, Dr. Allen will see you now.”
“I’ll just be out here, ok?” my mom gives my hand a reassuring squeeze. I walk through a couple of big double doors into a large office. A lady is seated at a desk off to the right. Her blonde hair is in tight curls around her slender face. On her long nose a pair of black-rimmed glasses are perched.
“You must be Brooklyn! I’m Dr. Allen, it’s nice to meet you!” She extends a hand across the desk to me. I cautiously take it.
“Yea,” is all I say.
“Well, why don’t we get started? Come over here and sit.” She gestures to a large couch with a large chair next to it. So the whole lie on the couch at the therapist’s is true. Huh, news to me. I take a seat in the middle of the black leather couch as Dr. Allen sits in the chair with a pad of yellow paper and a pen in her lap. “So tell me about you, and your life.”
“Um well I live in New York. I guess I’ve had a good life until recently.”
“What’s happened recently?” She prods.
“Well my parents got divorced. So me my mom and sister moved.”
“Do you know why? Do you still see your dad?”
“Um yea I know why. But not really only some weekends. But obviously not since we’ve been here. He hasn’t even called,” I realized I haven’t talked to him since we left.
“How do you feel about that?”
“Sad I guess. I mean I did always get along better with my mom. But he’s my dad ya know?” This lady is strangely easy to talk to.
“I do know. So just your parents divorce upsetting you?” I stay silent but shake my head no. “Do you want to talk about it?” Again I shake my head no as tears begin to roll down my cheeks. “That’s ok. Just talk whenever you’re ready.” She pushes a box of Kleenex on the table closer to me so I can grab one. I don’t even know how long I’ve sat here and cried but finally I think I’m ready to talk.
“Um well my my brother he he,” I stutter over my words, and my voice is shaky. “He killed himself.” I finally finish.
“What was his name?”
“G-gunnar.”
“Were you close to Gunnar?”
“He was my best friend. I didn’t even know he felt like that. I feel like it was all my fault!”
“Why do you say that?” I could hear her scribbling stuff down on the pad of paper.
“Because I didn’t notice he was hurting. I could have done something!” God it felt good to get all of this out. I didn’t know how much I was holding in.
“Often times people who are that far into their decision can’t be helped.” I sit and think over her words for a while. “That is the end of our hour, but I would really like to make this weekly if you are wiling.”
“I-I guess so.” I try to pull myself together.
“Ok. For next time can I have you do something?” I nod and she continues. “Can you write down all the things you loved about Gunnar? I’m going to give you this little notebook, and just whenever you think of something that you loved about him, maybe his laugh or smile then just write it down. Ok?”
“Um sure.” I take the small black notebook from her. “Thanks,” my voice comes out smaller and softer than it has been in a while and I realize just how rough I come off. Why did Luke even continue to talk to me? I probably came off as a bitch.
“So I’ll see you next week, same time!”
Luke’s POV
Brooklyn is sitting on her deck in a big chair, under a light writing in a notebook. I debate going over to her, not wanting to interrupt. “Hey,” I said as I cautiously approached her.
“Hey,” she smiles at me. She closes the notebook. There are two dates written on the cover 5/8/1993-9/16/2012. I decide to ignore it for now.
“Sorry if I’m interrupting something, I can go.”
“No, stay. Please?” She asks hopefully.
“So how was the thing with your mom today?” I ask sitting in the chair next to her.
“Um it was good actually. It was very eye opening I guess.” I raise an eyebrow at her. She darts her eyes away.
“Another thing you don’t wanna talk about?”
“Not really.”
“You are a tough one, Brooklyn from Brooklyn. But just so you know, I intend on making you love music. When you’re ready of course. I don’t want to push you.” She leans in really close to me, just centimeters from my lips.
“You’re amazing, Luke Hemmings. You know that?” I rest my hand on her cheek, using my thumb to brush away the single tear that is falling from her eye.
“I do now.” Brooklyn gives me a soft kiss before trying to pull back. “Uh uh,” I bring her back and reattach our lips to kiss her deeply. Her hands tangle in the back of my hair, tugging slightly causing me to moan. I move her so that she is on my lap. We sit for like that for what feels like hours. She is a drug and I can never get enough. “Go on a date with me,” I say when we finally break apart. “Like a real date, out in public.”
“I’d love that.”
“I’ll come by around 7,” we kiss one last time before she walks into the house. I walk back to the beach house smiling like an idiot.
I knock on Brooklyn’s front door cautiously. A smaller girl resembling Brooklyn answers.
“You must be Luke.” She states. “I’m Mae,” she sticks a hand out for me to shake.
“Nice to meet you,” I smile.
“K-lyn will be down in a sec!” Mae ushers me inside a beach house very similar to mine. We make small talk for a few minutes until Brooklyn comes downstairs.
“Hey, you ready?” She asks.
“Yep!” I extend an elbow for her to take and walk her to the door. “So I was thinking that we could get food at the diner then go for a walk, yea?”
“Sounds perfect!” I smile and take her hand as we walk along.
