Brooklyn’s POV
“So tell me more about you!” Luke asks after we order at the diner.
“Um there’s not much to tell really. I live with my mom since my parents got divorced a few months ago. I have a younger sister, Mae who you met. I love to draw and write, I want to write for a magazine someday and I love lazy afternoons, watching the sunset and I hate TV.”
“Wow. That’s impressive. What magazine?”
“Hopefully TIME or National Geographic. I want to write stuff that means something, you know?”
“I do. That’s all I want for my music. I want it to mean something someone. Change at least one persons life, and then I’ll know I’ve done it.” I totally understand exactly what he’s saying. It’s something Gunnar would have whole heartedly agreed with. “Oh crap. Sorry, I totally forgot about your music thing.” He says after a few minutes of my silence.
“No, it’s fine. I’m trying to work through it, so that helps I guess.”
“Oh, ok. Good!” Luke seems relieved. He smiles at me, creating two large dimples. I can’t help but smile back.
“Lukey!” I hear a high-pitched voice yell. I have no idea who it belongs to but I’m already annoyed. Turning my head I see a gorgeous bottle blonde coming towards us. Across the table I hear Luke groan.
“Hey, Jazmin. What do you want?”
“Just to say hi to you, cutie! And ask who your little friend is.” She gives me half a glance.
“Uh this is Brooklyn. And we’re on a date if you don’t mind.”
“A date? Why?”
“Because unlike you, she doesn’t lie, and backstab. Now please leave.” I feel the air leave my lungs. I know I’m not exactly lying to Luke, I’m just not telling him everything. Jazmin makes a face of disgust and walks away with her friends.
“Soo ex girlfriend?” I tentatively ask.
“No, definitely not, just a girl from my old school. She’s not a very nice person to say the least.”
“Yea. I got that vibe.” The waitress brings our food and we eat and talk for another hour. As we leave Luke laces his fingers through mine, his large hand engulfing mine perfectly. We make our way towards the beach and walk along the shore. The only light is the reflection of the moon off the ocean.
“I’m sorry about the interruption.”
“Don’t worry about it. It’s not your fault.” I assure him. We walk in comfortable silence for a while until we end up at the section of the beach behind where I’m staying. “Um, thank you for tonight. I had a really good time.” I smile at him.
“Yea, me too!” Luke leans down and pecks my lips. He brings his hands up to the belt loops on the front of my shorts, pulling me close. I break the kiss before it gets deeper.
“I’ll see you later, ok?” Luke gives me a smile before turning to walk back down the beach. I wanted to kiss him forever, but something in the back of my mind pulled me away.
Luke’s POV
I am so mad at Jazmin for interrupting like that. We had made out once at a party two years ago. I was falling over myself drunk that night. After that she kept thinking we were a thing. She wouldn’t leave me alone. She kept telling everyone to back off me because she was mine. Coincidently this all happened just after things with the band started taking off. I left school and it got better, she left me alone for the most part. After Jazmin left Brooklyn tensed up a bit and was more reserved. At the time I decided to forget it. It was probably just nothing. Walking along the beach with Brooklyn was the most content and at peace I have felt. When I kissed her she did pull away faster than I would have liked, but I’m not worried about it.
“How was the date?” Calum asks when I get inside.
“Really good! She’s opening up and sharing more!”
“That’s great. I’m happy for you dude! Just like we said the other night, be careful.” Why are they so worried? She doesn’t seem like a crazy to me. I sigh and head off to bed.
That’s how it went for weeks. I would spend the day or night with Brooklyn. Falling harder for her everyday. Every Tuesday she would disappear, saying she was hanging out with her mom. I would always see them leave the house together, only to return a few hours later.
“What do you and your mom do?” I asked her one late summer night sitting out on the beach.
“Um just shopping. Just girl stuff.” Funny I have never seen them come back with bags or seen her wear any different clothes.
“Oh, ok.” I tighten my hold on her waist, bringing her back close to my front as she sits between my legs. Her head rests on my chest, a comforting weight.
“You know that I really like you, right?” Brooklyn whispers.
“Of course. I feel the same way. Where is this coming from?” Maybe she was upset that we haven’t talked about what we are. Should I ask her to be my girlfriend officially? I kind of thought it was obvious we are together.
“No where. I just want you to know this is the happiest I’ve felt in a long time. You’re healing me, Luke Hemmings.” Now didn’t feel like the time to ask what I was healing. I silently watched as she drags a finger through the semi damp sand, creating a heart with our initials in it. Brooklyn leans her head up to look at me. Her brilliant green eyes shining. I connect my lips with hers, needing more of my own personal drug.
