Luke’s POV

I was glad when we left America, I wanted to get home so badly. But a part of me was disappointed that I hadn’t talked to Brooklyn. As the plane was taking off I couldn’t help but feel like a part of me was left behind in New York.

“You ok, mate?” Michael nudges me, breaking me out of my thoughts.

“No, but I will be eventually.” He nodded dropping the subject. All of our parents and Michael’s fiancé Harley met us at the airport. They were a comforting sight. It was only about two months before Michael’s wedding. It was going to be nice to have some solid time off.

“You may now kiss the bride.” The minister instructed. Michael bent down and kissed Harley, while the crowd clapped and cheered. From my spot up front I smile at one of my best friends. I’m happy he’s happy.

“Hey, Luke!” Ashton’s girlfriend, Dia, and Brooklyn’s old roommate sits down across from me at the reception. She flew down a few days ago to come with Ash.

            “Hi Dia.”

“You look in rough shape,” she points out.

“Gee thanks.” I roll my eyes.

“My point was, so is Brooklyn.”

“So? She’s still marrying that guy.”

“Yes, but she doesn’t love him like she loves you!”

“She hasn’t said that to me in a long time, so sorry if I don’t believe you.” I huff. “Besides, I can’t go crashing into her life again. If she wants me she can come find me.”

“You are both so difficult! No wonder you’re perfect together!” She grabs her drink and goes off to find Ash. I get up and say goodbye to Michael and Harley I need to go somewhere. Back home I grab a backpack and toss a few shirts in and one pair of jeans. I don’t need much, just enough for some time away. I jump in my car and start to drive to the beach.

Brooklyn’s POV

My walk to Graham’s doesn’t take long. Looking at my phone, it’s 3am. I really hope he answers. I knock lightly a few times, not wanting wake anyone else on the floor up. A few seconds later a very sleepy looking Graham with only Pajama pants on answers the door.

“Brooklyn? Hun what are you doing here at this hour? Aren’t we not supposed to see each other?”

“We need to talk.” He lets me in and we sit on his big leather couch. “You don’t want to marry me.” I simply state.

“What? Of course I do. I love you!” he seems confused.

“What I mean is, you shouldn’t want to marry me. I’m a mess. I always have been. I’ve hurt you, yet you forgave me. You deserve so much better than me.”

“Babe, where is this coming from? Do you just have cold feet?”

“No, more like love isn’t enough.” Graham stays quiet so I can explain. “It’s not that I don’t love you, because I do Graham. You were there for me when I needed you. And I will always care about you, but the spark just isn’t there anymore and I can’t keep lying to myself.”

            “It’s Luke isn’t it?”

I turn my head to look out the window at the rising sun. I feel like I’ve been on this plane for days; mostly because I have. I forgot how damn long the flight to Australia is. As I look out at the earth below I keep thinking of my talk with Graham.

“It’s Luke isn’t it? It’s always been him.” I nod my head.

“I’m sorry. I wanted us to work so bad that I never really thought about if it’s what I really wanted. I gave him my heart a long time ago, and I never got it back.” I can see the hurt in his eyes, but he is being rather good about this.

“I want you to be happy. If Luke makes you happy then I won’t stop you. I’ll always love and care about you Brooklyn.” He wraps me in his arms one last time. I slip the engagement ring off my finger and carefully place it on his coffee table, before slipping out of his life.

“Please fasten your seatbelts, we are preparing for landing.” I tighten the strap on mine and lay my head back, a light smile on my lips. Once we land and I exit the plane, I begin to feel nervous. What if he moved on from me? What if he hates me? My thoughts rush a million miles a minute while I call a taxi. As we rush off towards the coast I am brought back to four years prior. I think of myself in the backseat of possibly this very taxi riding to the place where everything would change. Closing my eyes I savor the ride.

“Um miss? We are here,” the cab driver’s voice wakes me.

“Oh sorry. Thank you!” I pay him and get out. I stand in the driveway of the beach house I once stayed in. It looks exactly the same. I pull the key out from my pocket and walk through the front door. Memories hit me like a brick. Moving further through the house I spot a figure out back on the beach. I wide smile spreads across my face. I set my bag down and slip off my shoes. I had changed pants on the plane and was now wearing high waist denim shorts. I open the sliding back door and make my way down the beach.

“How did I know I’d find you here?”

Luke’s POV

“How did I know I’d find you here?” Her voice comes from behind me. I know who it is before I turn around.

“Ashton called and said you bailed on your wedding. I was already here, figured I’d just wait.” That’s mostly true. I was really just hoping she’d come.

            “So you know?”

            “Yea.”

“ I understand why you left me years ago. But I promise we can get through anything together.” I slightly turn my arm so that all of my Statue of Liberty is visible. “Do you remember why we got these? We never spoke it, but that was just us not everything needed to be spoken. We got them to remind us that distance means shit! Because no matter what we do, we will always be connected.” I stay silent. Not knowing how to phrase our relationship better than he just had. “I love you so much Brooks.”

“I love you too, Luke. I always will.” My feet takeover and I run into his arms. Strong and comforting. We pull back and lock our lips together. Everything ignites, just like it always has with him.

“This might be too soon, but I want to make sure you never get away from me. Will you marry me?”
