Brooklyn’s POV
I sit in shock for what feels like ages. Girls always picture this moment over and over in their minds. But when it happens you can never be prepared.
“Yes.” I finally breathe out the breath I didn’t know I was holding. Graham smiles and pulls a gorgeous silver ring from his pocket and slides it onto my finger. He picks me up into a tight hug. “I love you,” I tell him.
“I love you too.” We walk back to his apartment hand in hand. I stay here and already have a portion of my stuff there for when I move in. I curl up into his chest and listen to his breathing steady with sleep. Around one in the morning I’m still wide awake. I lift my left hand and admire the ring. I love Graham. I should be happy, beyond happy. I should be ecstatic. I should be calling my mom crying tears of joy. I should be calling Mae and asking her to be the maid of honor. But I’m not. I’m not any of those things. The only thing swirling around my brain is Luke.
“Holy shit.” Dia and Reagan say in unison. Reagan grabs my hand to inspect the jewelry closer. “We better be your bridesmaids!”
“Duh.” Dia looks a bit conflicted. I know her really well, and her eyes tell her true emotion. She takes out her phone and disappears into her bedroom. I shake it off and continue to talk wedding with Reagan.
“We are going back to that club. It’s karaoke night. We are celebrating so you have no choice!” Dia announces coming back into the living room. Once again, knowing I have no choice I raid my closet for something to wear. I slip on a pair of dark blue skinny jeans, a white crop top just showing the very bottom of my tattoo and black oxford heels. I hear Dia leave as I am putting on the last of my makeup and straightening my hair. Reagan and I walk arm in arm to the club, meeting Graham outside. Inside someone is starting a song for karaoke. Looking away from Graham to the guy on stage my heart stops. Everything stops. Luke.
All of the air might as well have been sucked out of the room. Instinctively my hand jumps up to hover over the line of black ink on my stomach. “For a while we pretended that we never had to end it but we knew we’d have to say goodbye,” his eyes and words pierce right through me. As I swallow hard I am acutely aware of Graham behind me. Luke’s eyes never leave mine as he finishes the song.
“Brooks!” a thick Aussie accent yells at me.
“Calum!” I yell back, knowing it was him. I take him in, he has sure grown up in the last four years. Definitely goes to the gym now. His big arms grab me into a bear hug.
“I was hoping we would bump into you! It’s so good to see you!”
“You too! Michael!” I spot his white hair behind Calum’s head. “How is that girlfriend of yours?” I ask him when he pulls back from our hug.
“Fiance now actually,” he beams at me.
“No way! Congrats!” Graham clears his throat behind me, shaking me from my blast from the past. “Right, sorry. Guys this is my fiancé, Graham.” I finish just as Luke walks up. “Graham these are my old friends Michael, Calum, Ashton and Luke.” I point to each in order.
“Hi, nice to meet you guys.” Graham sticks out his hand to each of them. Luke looks pained as he takes the handshake. “That was a nice singing job. You should do that for a living!” he comments to Luke.
“He does. They all do.” I inform him. He looks a little embarrassed. “So I know we just got here but I’m not feeling well, I think I’ll head home.”
“No, you can’t!” Dia practically yells. “I mean this is your celebration! Please stay!”
Luke’s POV
I want to look away, but I can’t. She has changed so much in four years. Her hair is longer, and straighter. Her features and curves are more defined. Finishing the song to a round of applause from the crowd I hop off stage and make my way across the crowded bar. I watch as she hugs Calum and Michael. “Guys, this is my fiancé, Graham.” Brooklyn says just as I reach them. My chest tightens, and I feel the need to punch this Graham guy in the face. I reluctantly accept his handshake.
“That was a nice singing job. You should do that for a living!” he says to me. I resist the urge to laugh in his face. Apparently Brooklyn has told him nothing about us.
“He does. They all do.” She politely tells him. At her excuse to leave I feel guilty. I know it’s my fault she wants to leave. She gives Dia a look I can’t place. “Fine. I’ll stay for a bit.” I let out a breath I apparently was holding. Everything moves around me. I feel how I imagine Brooklyn felt during her ‘moments’ she used to have. Paralyzed to the spot, wanting desperately to get out of here. I watch her interact with everyone. Smiles and laughing. The way she interacts with Graham kills me. Maybe she is better off without me. I move to the bar and sit down with my drink next to Brooklyn’s roommate Reagan.
“So what’s your deal? You don’t talk much.”
“He’s more of the quiet type,” Calum jumps into the conversation.
“You should open up more! It’s not so bad!” Reagan presses.
“Why do you think I have this drink?” I half joke.
“Funny and cute. I just might have to take you home tonight!” She winks at me.
“Mate, I can’t do this.” I down my drink and set the glass on the counter before turning to walk out of the club. As I walk away I faintly hear Calum saying, “Luke gave his heart away years ago, and never got it back.” I shake my head and keep walking.
I mean to go back to the hotel but my feet want to keep walking. Taking in this giant city rushing by me, I understand why Brooklyn loves it here. There is a certain adrenalin rush to the busy city. I don’t notice I’ve stopped walking and at standing staring at the city stretching out before me until a voice snaps me from my thoughts.
“It’s amazing isn’t it?” Brooklyn’s voice is soft and sweet.
