The Carnival

~~

“Pass the syrup.” , Teddy reached out her hand, fingers outstretched.

Yawning, I lazily slid the bottle across the table. I poked slowly at my pancakes and forced myself to swallow down a few bites. In no way was I in the mood to eat. My stomach was tossing and turning. I was anticipating the day ahead of me.

Fran had been telling me that she needed to talk to me. I was pretty sure it was about Finn. Which would mean bye-bye Alyssa.

Someone interrupted my thoughts as a fist was slammed down on the table.

“Who ate the last pancake.”, Chaz growled.

I gulped down nervously.

I looked up innocently into his deep green eyes.

His sandy brown hair was slightly mussed and there was a hint of annoyance in his voice.

“I knew it would be you, new girl.”, he grumbled angrily.

“Todd was really hungry so I gave him a few extra.”, I reasoned.

“HE’S ALWAYS HUNGRY. AND HE ALWAYS TRIES TO TAKE MY PANCAKES!”, Chaz marched away angrily, throwing a fit like a five year old.

“Excuse him, hun. He loves my pancakes and he’s always in a bad mood on Saturday mornings.”, Fran called out from the stove. “CHAZ, I’M MAKING MORE!”

A few lazy boys stumbled into the kitchen in their pajamas. Flannel pants and shirtless.

A nice sight, really. A really nice sight.

I looked away from them and concentrated on my pancakes.

“I really hope so.”, Clay stumbled in after them.

Breakfast continued. And so followed an uninteresting morning.

“Can I have a word with you?”, Fran tapped my shoulder.

I tore my eyes away from the TV and lifted Todd off my lap. “I’ll be right back, buddy.”

“Yeah, Fran?”

“Honey, I get the sense that you really don’t feel comfortable here.”

“No, what gave it away?”, I chuckled.

Fran laughed heartily. “Don’t worry about it doll, it’ll feel like home in no time. The boys…just take a lot of getting used to, is all. You won’t be able to live without them, soon!” , She smiled.

I smiled. “It’s kinda hard to believe now, but we’ll see…”, I laughed.

“If you need anything, just ask. I can’t be quite direct about that point.”, She patted my shoulder.

“Oh. But one ground rule...If you ever develop any “special” relations with any of my boys, I’m afraid I’ll have to take down the ‘cool mom’ act and lock you in your room or something.”, She winked.

“Wouldn’t dream of it.”, I smiled.

“Really though, hun. I don’t want you goin’ breaking any hearts.”, She looked worriedly at me.

“Okay.”, I reassured.

Weird, totally out of the ordinary, but she got the message across. And I respected Fran for being able to do that.
